I have been always ashamed by my lack of literacy. I read more sites and periodicals than books.
It is my belief that your vocabulary does not expand or potentially even decreases without books.
My 6 years in Japan did not help me either.
Anyway. . .twisting words
Examples used for evil:
Politics.
In "Words That Work." author Frank Luntz includes the following examples.
"oil drilling" becomes "energy exploration,"
"estate tax" becomes "death tax,"
"logging" becomes "healthy forests initiative"
Examples used for good:
"transformational vocabulary"
I know this is a little much new age and self-improvment.
Still, I believe in it.
Our choice of words and structure have a great impact on ourselves and others.
In essentially the same way that politicians would fool us into submission, we
can lead people to make their own opinions or decisions. More importantly, people
changing their words convince themselves into becoming who they want to be.
As a side note, I think that most self-improvement fails where people believe
they should suppress negative feelings. That becomes an unsustainable situation.
