Summary: Jensen calls Chris to tell him about the co-star from his new show.
Note 1: So I wanted to try a new style with this fic. I might have had the idea when I was drunk or otherwise not quite sane and at a certain point the concept was too intriguing to just throw it away. The fic is actually a Jsquared fic but it’s told by Jensen and Chris in the form of phone conversations. First I wanted to have this dialog-only but at times it’s a bit confusing so I added small bits here and there but still, it’s mostly dialog.
Note 2: I want to take this opportunity to thank my beta because she's awesome. Without her I never would have felt comfortable enough to post it. THANK YOU! Your suggestions and explanations were so helpful. I owe you!
I added little bits and pieces after her beta, so all remaining mistakes are mine.

Jensen taps his thumb against his thigh as he listens to the familiar dial tone. He can’t help but grin as soon as he hears the Southern-accented voice, thick with Tequila and smoke and also a hint of sun and home.
“Hey, man.”
“Hey, Chris.”
“So, how is he? Didn’t you say you’d meet this new co-star today?”
Jensen sighs. “Don’t ask. He’s like that big, annoying baby. Cannot shut his mouth and never heard anything about ‘personal space’. He really irritates me.”
“Hm. Did he grope you already? That’s a new record even for you, dude. How long does it usually take you to get into your co-star’s pants? What was that guy's name from Smallville you were fucking?”
“Shut up, man, you realize you’re talking fucking nonsense? I might have a serious problem here.”
“Which would be?”
“Jared fucking Padalecki. Seriously. I have no clue how I’m supposed to work with the dude 18 hours a day 5 or 6 days a week.”
“You’ll probably just need to warm up to the boy. He can’t be that bad, man.”
“I’ll get back to you on that. And I’ll make you meet him and then you’ll see yourself, Chris.”

Before Jensen can even say his usual hi, Chris already drawls into his ear, smooth and low as always. “So, how’s it going with your co-star? What’s his name again? Chad?”
“His name’s Jared,” Jensen corrects. “And I was totally wrong when I said he’s like a big, annoying baby.”
“See? Told ya. The two of you just need a bit o’ time. For the chemistry. Is all.”
“Nah, I was wrong about the baby part. He’s like a big, fucking puppy. God, can I trade him in somewhere and get a nice co-star instead?”
“Why would you wanna do that, Jensen?”
“Because Chris, he’s annoying as hell. He’s clinging to me all the time. It’s like he follows me everywhere I go. Like a puppy. He’s too fucking loud too. Never quiet, I wanna strangle him 24 hours a day.”
“The boy probably likes you. And he probably just wants to connect with you. Give ‘im a chance.”
“Chris…”
“Stop the whining, bitch and call me as soon as you got news about Chad.”
“His name is Jared.”
“Yeah, whatever.”

“Okay, you proud of me now?”
Chris sounds genuinely confused, “Why would I be?”
“Went out for a couple of beers with Padalecki last night.”
“And?”
“And what? The dude might not be as stupid as I thought.”
“What makes you think that, man?”
“Well, we sorta had a good time. Like actual fun and he’s not as dumb as I thought he’d be. Yeah, he talks crap all the time but he knows that Kafka is an author and-“
“Who?”
“Never mind, Chris. I like you for different reasons,” Jensen laughs.
“What are you trying to say, Jen?”
“Nothing. Point is Padalecki actually might be a nice guy. He’s still a big, annoying puppy, though, who was under the table after a couple shots. I had to carry him home.”
“And?”
“And what, Chris?”
“Like, did you get into his pants already?”
Jensen doesn’t even try to hide his annoyance, “Chris! For Christ’s sake. I’m not interested in Padalecki’s pants, all right?”
“Whatever you say, Jensen, whatever you say.”

“How’s it going between Chad and you?”
“Jared,” Jensen corrects.
“Oh right, Jared.”
“Not too bad. Did I tell you he’s from Texas too? San Antone.”
“Seriously? You must have forgot when you were busy bitchin’ bout him.”
“Guess I’m slowly gettin’ used to him. Don’t you dare give me that pants comment, Chris!”
But Chris only laughs, “dude, I never would and am offended that you’d think I would.”
“Right, Chris. Right.”
“So, you two getting along better?”
“Yeah, sorta. Guess I just got used to the way he never shuts up and tells jokes that ain't even funny.”
“Others learned to deal with that too. You’ll get over it.”
“What d’you mean?”
“Nothing, Jen, nothing.”
“Anyway, I gotta hang up. Jared and I are gonna meet downtown to have a couple of beers and watch the football game.”
“Great, you got your cheerleading uniform ready?” Chris teases.
“Jerk.”
“Bitch.”
“Call me.”
“I will.”

“Hey.”
“Hey, what’s going on?” Chris asks.
“All good down there?”
“Not too bad, Jen. Had a few ideas for new songs and been working a lot on them.”
“Cool, but ya know what?”
“What?”
“I guess I kinda started liking the guy. Jared I mean. He’s actually kinda funny if you don’t take him too serious.”
But Chris only laughs, “I’m shocked.”
“Bet you are. No, honestly. Jared and I went out a couple times and he's a pretty nice guy. Guess you were right when you said we’d need to warm up first.”
“Which tells you what?”
“I wouldn’t know.”
“Tells you that Chris is always right.”
“You wish, dude.”
“Hey, a man can still dream, can’t he? By the way, how’s going with the mission to get into your co-star’s pants?”
Jensen only rolls his eyes at the comment, even though he’s totally aware that Chris can’t see him through the phone. When he keeps quiet, Chris goes on, “What?”
“Stop it already, how often do I have to tell you? I’m not interested in him, right? Why do you care anyway?” Jensen snarls.
“Thing is, dude, that I’m coming up to see ya in Canada soon and when you haven’t got laid for weeks, you’re all cranky and moody and no fun. Padalecki seems like the best option at the moment, is all.”
“I hate you.”
“Nah, you don’t.”
“Right, I don’t but I might pretend I did.”

It’s the shrill sound of his mobile that wakes Jensen up.
“Mmmmmh?”
“Good morning, Jensen. Or should I say good afternoon?”
“Morning.”
“So, you went out last night and had fun?”
“Hmmmm.”
“Lemme guess. With Jared?”
“Hmmmm,” Jensen murmurs, clearly not getting what this is all about.
“You still seeing other people these days?”
“What, you jealous?”
“Nah. Still know that I’m the best buddy in the world.”
“You are. But you know what?”
“What?” Chris asks.
“You’d be an even better friend if you wouldn’t call me on a Sunday before, what time is it?”
“Over there? Should be around 5 pm.”
“Right, don’t call me before 6 then.”
“Whatever, Jen. Just do me a favor.”
“What kind of favor?”
“Don’t get too much into Jared, ok? Make sure you also see other people.” Chris sounds so serious and Jensen definitely doesn’t know how to take that.
“Why? Weren’t you the one who told me that I’d need to give the boy a chance?”
“Sure, it's good ya did and I'm happy you're getting along so well, but dude. Don't forget your other friends.”
“Why?”
“Your brain’s not awake yet, is it?”
“Nope,” Jensen admits.
“Just saying, Jen, if you’re all into Jared now and something happens, ya know, make sure you have people to turn to.”
“What you’re saying?”
“Nothing. Just that maybe you’re a bit fixated on Jared at the moment. Is all.”
“Hm.”

“I fucked up, Chris.”
“You gotta specify that, dude.”
“Okay, so last night Jared and I went out and had a few beers. At I-can’t-remember-what-time they kicked us out of the bar because they closed down.”
“That ain’t good.”
“Shut up. Anyway, we went to my place to have another beer.”
“That ain’t good either.”
“Chris, please. So, here we were and in the kitchen and I sorta lost control and fuck, I don’t know.”
“What happened?”
“Kissed him,” Jensen sighs.
“He a good kisser?”
“Dude!”
“What? That’s an important question.”
“You’re as useful as tits on a boar.”
“Come on, man! So what exactly is your problem now?”
“He doesn’t answer my calls, I just can’t reach him.”
“Did he show up at set?”
“It’s Sunday, Chris. We sometimes have Sunday off. Every ten years or so.”
“Oh, so you gonna see him tomorrow?”
“Yeah, but see, that’s not the point. I wanna talk with him about this on my own and not on set when there’s people around and it’s gonna be awkward.”
“Bet you don’t.”
“Shut up, I can hear you smirking,” Jensen hisses before he adds, “Dude, I’m actually miserable here. I started liking the guy.”
“How much?”
“Dunno. Quite a lot, I guess.”
“Like, ‘we’re in serious trouble’ much?”
“Yeah.”
There’s a pause before Chris finally speaks again, “Shit.”
“Yeah. What do I do?”
“Stop trying to call him and drive over to his place. Call me when you get back and tell me how it went.”
“Will do.”

“How’d it go yesterday? You talked to him?” It’s the first question Chris asks. No time for hellos and how are yous.
“No, he wouldn’t open the door.”
“So you saw him on set today?”
“Yupp.”
“And? Man, fucking tell me,” Chris demands.
“He hardly talked to me either. Barely even looked at me.”
“Shit.”
“Yeah. I went by his trailer before he went home.”
“And?”
“And we sorta talked. Which was more Jared rippin' shit on me for kissing him.”
“Right, but didn’t he kiss ya back?”
“He did.”
Jensen sighs and when Chris asks, “Where’s the logic?” he has to think before he can answer.
“Well, he thinks it’s all my fault, ya know, like, because I started it. Gave me the whole ‘I’m not gay’ speech.”
“Oh, that makes sense,” Chris adds sarcastically.
“Yeah.”
“What now?”
“He said he thinks there should be some distance between us.”
“That ain’t good. Sorry, man.”
“Nah, it’s my own fault. I should learn how to control myself better when I’m drunk or just drink less.”
“Give him a little time to pout and then you’ll be fine.”
“Hope you’re right.”
“I always am, don’t forget that.”

“How’s it going with Jared?”
“As always,” Jensen sighs.
“So, he still ain’t talking to you because of one stupid kiss?”
“Nope.”
“I've done worse to people and they're still talking to me.”
“Hm.”
“Dude?”
“Hm?”
“Dude, what’s wrong with you? I’m trying to help you here.” Chris is still far from yelling, but there’s definitely a raise in his voice.
“Well, maybe just the fact that Jared hasn’t talked to me in days. But it ain’t no big deal.”
“Sure, that’s why you’re not mopey at all.”
“Fuck you, Kane,” Jensen spits.
“Not through the phone, thanks. But hey, why don’t you give me Padalecki’s number and I’m gonna call him.”
“Because you’ll only make it worse?”
“Can it get worse?”
“Guess it can. He only glared at me about 6 times today, one of those ‘Hate you’ looks and not 15 times like last week. So yeah, could get worse.”
“Whatever. I'm gonna get his number and give him a call. Trust one of your oldest friends for once, dude.”
“Do I have any other choice?” Jensen softens as he remembers the times Chris actually did help him in the past.
“Not really. No need to thank me, you can buy me a, erm, you’ll figure something out later. Talk to you soon.”
“That a threat?”
“You bet.”

Before Chris can say anything Jensen snarls, “What the fuck did you tell him?”
“Hey, man. It’s good to talk to you, too. How you doing?”
“Chris, I’m serious. What the fuck did you tell Jared?”
“Why? Is he talking to you again?”
“Yeah, he asked if I wanted to hang out.”
“Oh, bet you’d prefer to MAKE out, dude,” Chris laughs.
“Shut up, Chris. Why is he suddenly sharing and caring again when he’d barely look at me just a few days ago?”
“What? Isn’t that what you wanted? What’s wrong with that?”
“Nothing.”
“So why are you acting like a high school girl?” Chris sounds confused.
“I…I just want to know what you threatened him with is all.”
“Dude, I didn’t threaten him. Just told him a few things ‘bout you and why he oughta give ya a second chance.”
“See, that’s what I’m talking about! You told him things about me. How do I know you didn't make it worse?”
“Chill out, man. I mean, whatever I told him was good enough to make him want to talk to you again so what’s your fucking problem?”
“Forget it, Chris,” Jensen hisses.
“Man, tell me. What’s your problem?”
“It’s just that maybe…oh, I don’t know…maybe I would have liked to…well…work it out myself.”
“Yeah, and we all saw how well you handled that. You hardly left the house you were so depressed.”
“I would have figured it out,” Jensen tries to defend himself.
“Bet you would, man. No doubt ‘bout that.”
“Well, maybe I just…never mind.”
“What, Jensen?”
“I don’t know how to act anymore, you know, around Jared. I…sorry, I'm sure you don't wanna hear me whine.”
“Dude, come on. You can tell me. I won’t even tell Steve that you were all teary eyed.”
“What a great friend you are, Kane” Jensen doesn’t even want to hide the sarcasm in his voice.
But Chris only laughs softly, “See? Now spill!”
“The thing is that being around Jared’s gonna be weird. Ya know I like him, like really like him. And now I don’t know what he’s expecting of this or what I’m expecting myself. So he asked me to come over but what am I gonna do? Pretend that kiss never happened? Or try to go for it at the risk of ruining everything?”
“You big girl.”
“Dude, please…”
“Okay, okay. Quit whining. It's just that I can't make this decision for you. You've gotta do what feels right. Go with your gut and you'll be fine, man.”
“I so hope you’re right, Chris.”
“Call when there’s news.”

“Hey.”
“Hey, long time no hear.”
“Sorry ‘bout that, Chris.”
“Nah, it’s good. I’ve been busy myself. So, how’s it going with Jared? You two screwing by now?” Chris teases.
“Ha, you know I'd normally kick your ass for a crack like that.”
“But?”
“But I can’t be bothered, think what you want, jerk.”
“You’re disgusting.”
“What? Why?” Jensen laughs into the phone.
“You’re never that laid back unless you’ve just been fucked. And the idea of you getting fucked is disgusting.”
“I’m glad you’re happy for me and that for once my life seems to go smooth. Thanks, dude, you’re a real friend.”
“Heh, I know. So? How’s it going with you guys?”
“You sure you wanna hear it?”
“Not the juicy, naughty details, thanks, I’ll pass. I really don’t want nightmares featuring you and your boyfriend fucking, but other than that…go ahead.”
“Well, we’re not exactly boyfriends, Chris.”
“You’re not?” Chris sounds confused, clearly expecting something different.
“No. We’re just hanging out a lot and we’ve talked about all this. Between us, I mean.”
“Oh, shoot me. That makes two giant girls.”
“What? Thought you wouldn’t want me to tell ya about the sex anyway! So, we decided we’ll see where it goes.”
“Dude, I tell ya, that boy has quite a crush on you.”
“How would you of all people know, Chris?” Jensen teases before he quickly adds, “You’re not exactly, erm, empathetic, you know?”
“Hey, who's the one who called him when all this was a huge piece of shit? You know, when I called him Jared and I actually had a conversation and dude, that guy never shuts up.”
“Hm. What did Jared tell you?”
“Wouldn't you like to know?”
“Actually, yeah. I mean, it might be good to know where all this stuff with Jared is going. See, he told me he likes me. He’s just not sure of how much and how far he can go.”
“That’s the point,” Chris states.
“Huh? I don’t get it.”
“Well, the kid’s new to all this, no wonder he ain’t sure how far he can go.”
“I still don’t get it.”
“Did you hit your head while he was fucking you or something?”
“Chill, dude. We actually, well, we haven’t fucked. Yet. Made out a little and I blew him once, but…”
Jensen doesn’t have the chance to finish his sentence as Chris butts in, “Dude, TMI! Seriously, don’t give me nightmares.”
“Sorry, so what is your point?”
“My point is that Jared freaked all the way out when you attacked him that night when you were drunk because he's never had a thing with a man before. The kid's still got his fag cherry.”
“Oh.”
“Yeah, oh,” Chris parrots.
“That explains why he's a little tense sometimes.”
“Oh, I bet.”
“Chris, this is not the right time to make jokes.”
“You need to relax, dude. I’m not giving you any bad news here, all I’m trying to tell ya is that maybe you shouldn’t expect too much from Jared at first. Is all.”
“Guess that sounds like a plan.”
“Sure does. You know, he told me that he likes you, so don’t rush things and you’ll see you’re gonna be fine.”
“Thanks, Chris. What would I do without you?”
“Oh, you'd probably still be fucking that guy from Smallville.”
“Hah, oh yeah. Thank God for you, my big, great savior!”
“Shut up, Jensen and keep the girly trash for your boyfriend. I gotta go. I’ll call ya.”

“I just wanted to thank you.”
“Morning. Jensen that you?”
“Yeah, morning, sleepyhead. Didn’t you have a gig last night?”
“Hmm,” Chris yawns, “That's the reason I'm still sleeping.”
“Oh, sorry bout that. But, well, I just wanted to thank you.”
“What for, dude?”
“For what you did. Bout Jared and I. You helped a lot.”
“So you two are good now?”
“I guess so,” Jensen beams.
“Man, I can almost hear you grinnin'. But seriously, you’re welcome.”
“Hey Chris?”
“Yeah?”
“You remember that one time where we talked on the phone and you said something like ‘No need to thank me. You can get me a present’?”
Chris hesitates before he finally says, “Not sure I remember.”
“Anyway, I got you a present. No, Jared and I got you a present. For helping out.”
“Uhm, that sounds, erm, frightening.”
“You’re gonna love it.”
“What makes you so sure?”
“For starters, I know you pretty well and also, you’re pretty easy, dude. Jared already got you figured out. Completely.” Jensen is clearly excited, talking almost too fast for anyone to follow.
“You gotta be kidding me.”
“No, I'm not. Anyway, we're stopping by next weekend and I want you to meet Jared. You know, really get to know him. We'll bring your present then.”
“Man, I so cannot wait,” there’s sarcasm in Chris’ voice but Jensen knows him well enough not to be offended.
“I know you're just playin' it down low now but inside, I bet you’re feeling like a kid on Christmas morning.”
“This present…is it a stripper?”
“Nope. And you ain't getting any more hints.”
“Please tell me it's got something to do with women,” Chris pleads.
“Listen Chris, I’ll talk to you soon. Until then you’re gonna be a good boy, right? Bye!”
“Man, sometimes I hate that boy.”
