"Bendígame, Padre, porque he pecado."

Bless me, Father, for I have sinned.

The priest doesn’t even know what to say or how to react as Luis gets down on the wooden kneeler of this confessional in the Cathedral of the city centre again. He is not to blame, because in the seminaries he had to take to become a priest, he never learnt how to deal with something like…this. He was never taught how to treat someone who comes to confession each day, sixth day in a row, admitting grave sins, but most probably lacking remorse and respect for the Lord’s holiness.

He was never taught how to deal with men like Luis.

Luis has to grin as he looks at the old man, who tries to appear as calm and restrained as possible, but from the way the Padre shifts in his seat, how he fidgets with the cord of his vestment Luis can easily tell that the old man at unease.

Do I make you nervous? Do you feel uncomfortable when I am only inches away from you?

Is it because you’ve never been this close to Lucifer before?

“Padre, I have to confess…”

Luis doesn’t even bother look at the other man, like you would do normally when speaking to someone, no matter if it’s a priest or not. Instead he focuses on his fingernails, those very same fingernails that dug into Xabi’s delicate skin hours before, leaving ugly bruises.

“What is it this time?”

So, it’s no longer “Son”, Padre?

“I shouted angrily at my lover when we had a fight last night. I didn’t even try to pull myself together.”

Wrath.

Ira.

The deadly sin associated with Satan, the adversary, Lord of the flies.

Some might say that we simply cannot control our emotions and that wrath is such an emotion, but still the church does not accept this excuse, pretends that flawless Christ never committed any sin himself, so who could be a better patron for this grave sin than the Antichrist himself?

Luis sighs. He’s not a quarrelsome person, but when someone provokes him, he does not even try to hold it back. Xabi had to experience it yesterday.

He still focuses on his fingernails as he tells the priest that he went to spend the evening with his lover and that this lead to heated discussion and swearing, to insults and violence.

Luis knows that he might look like a weak person, but he also knows that when he hits someone with his fist that they realise just how much they underestimated him.

“I punched my lover, Padre, but he deserved it.”

He.

That’s it.

That’s the moment when Luis lifts his head to enjoy the expression on the priest’s face. And indeed, it’s just the way Luis had hoped it would be. This is the confession that Luis has not only hit a person, because he couldn’t - didn’t want to - control his wrath but the fact that this person was his lover, his male lover, is totally taking away the old man’s breath. Not in a way though, like a little girl would be speechless when she gets the pony she always wanted, rather more like a devout Christian facing Lucifer for the first time, looking into his countenance when he never has before.

Oh, Padre. Don’t put up that expression. I don’t want to humiliate you even more by laughing right into your face, but that look upon your face…

Luis doesn’t give the Padre the reason for the fight, thinks it’s none of his business and apart from that, it’s not yet time to give away their devilish secret, to tell him how he’s been used. It’s not yet time to let the priest know that Xabi thinks Luis’ efforts of confession are senseless and that Xabi believes he already won their dirty little bet and that Luis should finally give in.

But Luis reminded Xabi that he has another two tries, that only after the last confession on Sunday the winner will be known. They discussed and fought, eventually got physical because both of them do everything they do with a lot of passion.

Then they fucked, hard and ruthless on the carpet of the living room, no time to go upstairs to get comfortable. Everything they do, they do it with a lot of passion.

“So, Padre,” Luis says, bringing the old man back to reality, “tell me. Will I be dismembered alive, like I deserve to be treated, or will the Holy Lord forgive me again, because he loves all of his sheep?”

The priest stares at him for some time, stunned and it actually takes him some moments before he seems to remember what he learnt during his seminaries.

What are you wondering, Padre? How someone can sin as much as I do without the slightest hint of remorse or how you could be fooled so much by physical appearance and seeming innocence?

And yet, once more and to Luis’ disappointment (he might even get angry again), the old man tells him, that yes, even for someone like Luis, the Lord’s mercifulness is unlimited but that he really, really has to repent, otherwise there will be no hope and Luis will have to spend his life after death in hell.

Home, Padre, not hell.

Luis nods lazily before crossing himself just as lazily and getting up.

”Amen, Padre."

"Amen. God speed you."

“See you tomorrow…”

This time, it’s spoken out loud.
