Art talk: Botticelli @ Städel Frankfurt

Jan 06, 2010 22:17

One of my all time favorite artists is Sandro Botticelli, an Italian Renaissance artist who lived in Florence in the second half of the 15th century and who - in my humble opinion - was one of the greatest artists of all time. Imagine my incredible squee when I learned that the Städel - an art museum in Frankfurt - would be holding a 4 months special exhibit on him, displaying some of his greatest works.

Today, I finally went. My two BFFs came into town (since today was a public holiday in the stay they live, but not in the state I live) and I skipped work half an hour early to meet them at the museum. The exhibition was incredibly crowded, but it was well worth it. They showed about 80 works (his, from his workshop and contemporary artists) and quite cleverly explained his work, his life and the events that influenced everything.

Sadly they did not show my two favorite paintings by him: The Birth of Venus (all time favorite painting ever, ever, ever!) or Primavera. But the Galleria degli Uffizi lent them Pallas and the Centaur, which is incredible. It is gigantic and amazing and beautiful and breath-taking in detail. I've always liked Botticelli's (and the Renaissance's) portrayal of women, especially in his mystic paintings.

The exhibit still runs until the end of February and if you happen to be in Frankfurt, live close to Frankfurt or feel like making a trip, I strongly advise you to go see the exhibition. It's well worth it. I think this is the first time ever that there's such a big Botticelli exhibition outside of Italy. You will not be disappointed! I even bought myself a poster like this:

After the exhibit, I took the BFFs to another local restaurant that I hadn't been to to try local food and drinks. Nom nom nom!

I know I've been sluggish with replying to comments lately. Sorry about that! I promise I will get to them this weekend. I've been crazy busy with RL but I'm not forgetting about those comments! <3
