NEAR KERBALA, Iraq (Reuters) - New U.S. tests indicate that substances found at sites in central Iraq are not chemical weapons agents as first suspected, U.S. military sources said on Tuesday.
"The latest tests turned out negative," one source said.
U.S. military officers said on Monday that initial tests on substances found near the central Iraqi town of Hindiya suggested the presence of nerve agents sarin and tabun and the blister agent lewisite.
The military sources said it was not yet clear what the substances were. One officer had said on Monday that they might turn out to be simple pesticides.
The instant reporting of every new find as possible WMD worked in the favor of the administration at first, because they really need those things to show up soon, but now even Rumsfeld has seen it start to look like a joke and has asked for it to be toned down. I disagree with this war totally. It was based on the idea of the existence of WMDs. People supported it because they were convinced by the government that we were under imminent threat of these WMDs being used on us. The government knows that the entire world is waiting for the proof they just couldn't show before the war. The very minute this thing is done, they better give us all the reasons why they had to keep some things secret and then they better have proof of these WMDs. They are desperate to have anything, even the smallest bottle forgotten in the back of a lab since the time we gave them the means to produce WMD will be used as proof.
