The
Deepwater Horizon oil spill has been going on for over a month. Would it work for them to freeze it stopped? I realise the oil flow rate is high, but ice has a way of clogging flow. I'm picturing attaching a freezer element to the riser pipe and freezing the pipe, the water around it, and, hopefully the oil from the inside of the pipe.
(No, I haven't cracked open Heat and Mass Transfer to do a back-of-the-napkin calculation.)
