Four Times Merlin Spilled Some Wine, And One He Didn't. benebu July 12 2009, 16:49:24 UTC
Four Times Merlin Spilled Some Wine:

1. Merlin was running late. All morning long, he had wandered through the Northern Forest in search of a rare flower Gaius might as well have imagined for all he had seen of it. He would have to go back in the afternoon, hopefully with better luck because he had to be back at five o'clock to meet Gwen who was dying to talk about Lancelot and had noticed Morgana's attention tended to wander whenever she brought up the subject. He would also have to find a moment to polish Arthur’s horse and feed his armour. Or something.

Merlin was running late, even if he had ran to the kitchen and was now navigating the corridors of Camelot with Arthur's lunch tray as fast as his feet would carry him. He was congratulating himself on not having spilled anything when he literally ran into Arthur's door with a resounding thump.

The prince opened his door to find his servant sprawled on the floor, stew and wine running down his shirt. Arthur didn't say anything, didn't respond to Merlin's apologetic smile, just walked over him and went to fetch some bread and cheese from the kitchens before going down to the stables. What had his father been thinking when he saddled him with Merlin as a personal servant, he would never understand.

2. Arthur was animatedly retelling his epic hunt to the table, and Merlin, though he was supposed to be there to pour wine and pass the dishes, was actually more interested in observing the knights and assessing whether their eyes where shining with envy over the lucky hunter or lust over the prince. He didn't notice Arthur's widely opening his arms to describe the encircling move that had earned him the impressive trophy, and he spilled some wine on the table, the plates… and the prince.

3. They were unexpectedly camping out that night, though they might very well have been the only two caught unawares - Gaius had made sure Merlin was taking some blankets, and Gwen had pressed a heavy hamper full of food and wine into his arms before they left. They had been talking - well, Arthur had been talking when Merlin suddenly noticed how close the prince was sitting to him. His goblet started tipping dangerously at that point and yes, he spilt his wine. Arthur just smiled and took the goblet off his hand, setting it aside.

When Arthur threw him back on his blanket, Merlin smiled too, suddenly glad they hadn't been able to make it back to Camelot that night.

4. When he spotted Arthur's hand on Knight Owen's knee, Merlin "accidentally" spilled half a decanter of wine on the poor knight's shirt. Later, Arthur would act as if nothing had happened. It wouldn't do to let Merlin know that his display of jealousy had affected him.

...And One He Didn't:

5. Merlin's hand had never been steadier than the moment he raised the King of Mercia's goblet to his lips. His heart was thumping, but his mind was perfectly calm. The drink was laced with poison, and he would prove it. He downed it to the last drop in a few gulps.

I'm glad you liked it.

Oh my, run-on sentences in #1. I'm grateful to have a little inspiration back, but certainly I can't have forgotten everything.

Merlin's clumsiness is a well-known fact, so it could perfectly have been an accident. Except for the part where it wasn't.

I'm all caught up on season 1, yes. That's all there is so far, isn't it? There I was, lamenting the lack Merlin on TV, when I saw that the DVD were available. How could I resist? Also, I've been thinking about you last week-end when I saw the road sign to "Pierrefonds castle". We didn't go through the village, or I would have bought postcards. Maybe next time?

(And there I wanted to be all sneaky and mysterious about the fact that I've seen Merlin. I'm so not a Slytherin.)
