Some time ago my boyfriend lost a friend to a group of traveling sales kids peddling magazine subscriptions. He didn't help him when he had the chance, but maybe we can make up for it now.
RIGHT NOW in birmingham there is a group of kids (16-25) selling magazine subscriptions hoping to win a "free trip" to some tropical place...bahamas,cancun... it doesn't matter where they say. They aren't going. They are trapped in a underground sales ring that exploits homeless..poor..aimless kids and forces them to sell magazines for little or no profit. They have daily sales quotas that ,if go unreached, will cause them to be severely physically BEATEN. They have no means of saving money and constantly under surveilance. They CANNOT leave the organization. They are told if they attempt to leave, the others will be severely beaten in their place. Any friendships formed are exploited. It's really awful.
IF YOU ARE APPROACHED by young people selling magazines, attempt to talk to them on a one on one basis and find out if they need help. They are here for a week, and then they will be moving onto a nearby city. If you can hide some in your house, or find a way to seperate them from the group long enough for them to move on DO IT. but MAKE SURE they are ALONE. They could be paired with a group leader who will turn them in. This sounds crazy, but I am telling the truth. There is an article about this organization here:

PLEASE REPOST IF YOU ARE IN BIRMINGHAM!!! THIS IS VERY REAL!!!!!!!!!
