In which this got a bit long...

I finally saw The Social Network. Which was all at once fascinating and almost a let down after all the hype that surrounded it. I wanted *more* out of it but at the same time I think they did an interesting job of balancing a lot of point of views and opinions and portraying them pretty well. I think the lawyer lady said it best at the end with "you're not an asshole but you're doing a good job of acting like one". I will say I really like Jessie Eisenberg as an actor though. I'm really looking forward to what he does next.

It was also interesting watching that movie after having seen Whip It and Black Swan not two days ago. It was a startling portrayal of Male gaze vs Female gaze (The Social Network was almost entirely a male cast and Whip It was almost entirely female, it was quite the 180). At the moment I think I'm leaning towards more Female gaze media though as I enjoyed the first two movies a lot more.

There was a question that came out of my viewing of it though. It's sort of an unprecedented movie as it's portraying something that's not even ten years old yet, so everyone in that movie is still alive and able to watch it. But if they made a movie about your life and you were still alive for it, would you even want to see it? I'm totally undecided at that point because holy crap, nobody wants a lense that close on their life.

I mean really, I think John Green said it best with

"In response to the comment/criticism that Holden Caulfield, the narrator of THE CATCHER IN THE RYE, is unlikeable, I regret to inform you that you are also unlikeable.

So am I.

There’s this weird, but pervasive feeling in the world of contemporary coming-of-age fiction that characters ought to be either the person you want to be or the person you want to be with. [...]

[Holden Caulfield] is the guy you secretly know yourself to be."

And really, who wants to see themselves portrayed as an asshole where other people can see it?

However the fangirl in me was *immediately* casting it for a Merlin AU. I just can't decide if Eduardo is Gwaine or Arthur (right now I'm leaning towards Arthur with Sean as Gwaine. But like then I think it would be fascinating to make Sean = Morgana and Eduardo = Gwen and the trio would be Gwaine and Lancelot and Arthur. Hm.) Oh fandom how you make life way more interesting.

Also I apparently had more thinky thoughts on The Social Network than I thought. Wow.
