It's spring break! I have mostly spent it working and consuming massive quantities of media and catching up on schoolwork, but I did lurk around SXSW Sunday evening and this morning in the hopes of running into Clark Gregg. ALAS, no luck, though I did enjoy the gaming expo (and made baby brother super jealous ohohoho) and the glorious weather. My roommate got a pass by volunteering and got to touch Macklemore yesterday and was flipping her shit about this, which was hilarious and adorable.
After this I have a five page essay that I REALLY need to write so uh, gonna get started on that :| Ideally I will finish it and then track down P, hand off the book and ideally make her do the reading so she doesn't get another iffy grade on her paper :/
I was going to try to stop by the comic book store's "sidekick store" and pick up some $1 back-issues of DC comics, but I COULD NOT FIND IT which was the worst. Fortunately it (was supposed to be) only like half a mile farther away than the actual store, so I didn't waste a lot of time looking for it or anything since I was picking up ~the weekly haul anyway. (AND WHAT A HAUL IT WAS).

Oh my god just the dialogue in this issue in general is LOL-worthy without lightening the mood too much? Like you're in no doubt they're about to have to fight their way out but they're throwing quips around like watermelon seeds. FLAWLESS SUPERHERO QUIPPING, KELLY SUE, FLAWLESS SUPERHERO QUIPPING.

Secret Avengers #2
Woah, mass suicide right from the start. This book is dark, I approve? I just don't want the mind-rapey darkness of the first issue, yaknow.
I'm not really a fan of all this from-the-villains-POV though. I really prefer stories be told from one POV, or at least POVs that mesh together rather than opposing POVs (so, all "good" guys--good being subjective in this comic for SURE--or one character or idk SOMETHING).
W o w unfortunate frame, I honest to god though Baby Fury was blasting trickshot with a fart, which isn't even usually where my brain goes. Then I realized it was a gun shoe. Um.

So to conclude: a) I still have no idea what's going on and not in a good, I-am-so-intrigued way, but in an omg this is such shitty storytelling way. I'd talked to some of you about needing to drop some comics--especially with Age of Ultron EVERY WEEK--and this was on the list as a give-it-one-more-shot thing, because the first issue really just sets things up. It makes me really sad because I was REALLY looking forward to this--it heavily features literally every single one of my favorite characters and a bunch of my favorite tropes--but it's handled those tropes REALLY poorly and the writing is just really shitty imo and I can probably get the panels with Phil on tumblr anyway?
So yeah, I'm going to have to say I'm gonna drop this one :( If anyone keeps up with it, let me know if it gets better, please?
I also dropped Avengers, not like, for good, but I decided that it's far from groundbreaking (like, could you go any more boring stereotypical ALL-POWERFUL VILLAIN THAT CANNOT BE STOPPED BUT THEY MUST MANAGE SOMEHOW than this???) and it really, of all the comics I'm following right now, definitely does not need my issue-by-issue support, so I think I'm going to wait for the trade paperbacks in the future. I just don't care enough to spend the extra money to keep up with it. :/
Walking Dead 3x13
Eh. Could have been better, and a bit of a let-down after last week's episode. TBH I don't even really remember what happened other than wanting to strangle Andrea for not being as awesome of a character as she could be--nothing new there--and finding the Governor vaguely repulsive.
Hershel was excellent though?
Vikings 1x3
I do not know if I stressed how much you should all be watching this last week but YOU SHOULD ALL BE WATCHING THIS OH MY FUCKING GOD. I do not think I have ever seen more flawless characterization in a television show EVER. There are just all of this little perfect moments that are very real, and just... a lot of time I feel like historical shows go for the ~dark and gritty and this one does, there is plenty of dark and gritty, but the characters can also be ridiculously cheerful and silly at times, and just very... matter-of-fact. They just all feel so beautifully multi-dimensional and real and LAGERTHA GETS TO GO ALL SHIELDMAIDEN FOR REALS AND SAIL WITH THEM AND KICK ASS THIS WEEK YESSSS :DD
Also there was an absolute gem of a scene where Lagertha and Ragnar are sexin' and Athelstan The Monk is sitting awkwardly nearby trying to ignore them and then they POP OUT OF NOWHERE and are like
well, to quote tumblr:
"mostly because ragnar was so excited, like, LOOK WE LIKE YOU!!! WE THINK YOU’RE CUTE!!! SMILES DON’T YOU LIKE MY ABS + HER THIGHS, WE WANT TO KISS YOU, WHY ARE YOU SAYING NO???? :(((((((((("
And then (totally consensual for the win!) threesome ensues and Athelstan gets to be SUPER GUILTY ABOUT IT and canon bisexuality portrayed in a positive light (okay not super positive for Athelstan but what do you really expect from a priest losing his virginity in a threesome???) and :DDDDD I LOVE THIS SHOW SO MUCH YA'LL THE HISTORY CHANNEL HAS REDEEMED ITSELF FOR ALL ITS YEARS OF SHITTY REALITY YOU SHOULD BE WATCHING IT IF ONLY TO CONVINCE THEM THAT THEY OUGHT TO BE DOING MORE OF THIS AND LESS FUCKING ICE TRUCKERS YO.
Lost Girl Attempt #2
So I tried this about a year ago on the recommendation of a co-worker and just really, really was not into it. Upon rewatch, I think a lot of that was that I was just not in the mood for a slightly campy monster-of-the-week show at the time. As
tellitslant brought up, EVERY. SINGLE. EPISODE. passes the Bechdel test and it is glorious! I got most of the way through season 1 before my campy monster-of-the-week tolerance ran out and I ended up rewatching the first season of Walking Dead. Again. But I'm enjoying it! It is, without a doubt, the best portrayal of bisexuality I have ever ever seen, and ALL THE SUPER HOT PEOPLE YESSSS, and I quite enjoyed it.
Angel Attempt #2
So after Walking Dead I didn't feel quite like returning to Lost Girl and I ended up trying to like Angel again. The thing is uh, I really hate the character Angel with a violent and passionate fury and just, loathe his face and uuugh uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuugh so much inexplicable hate for the character. I only ever wanted to watch for season five Spike (whom I also hate, but it's a weird sort of love/hate). The thing is, I never could figure out what was going on when I tried jumping straight into season 5. So I've sort of been watching it in the background while I do other things and not really paying attention and that seems to be working for me.
So uh, yes.
