Their cargo throws back his head and laughs. )
“Not yet,” the soothsayer replies. “I will be soon.”
The soldier smiles reflexively at the joke.
That's the moment when the hair rose on the back of my neck. Eeeeeeeeeeeeep. His future-tense dialogue was subtly and brilliantly handled throughout.
Well, this was beautiful and remorseless. Very fitting for a Sherlock who lived through the Trojan War.
I must admit, I resent Sherlock for his choice, even though John cannot. He wanted to beat the bloody god at his own game, and in order to do so he made John his tool rather than his love; a vessel rather than a companion. This was a Sherlock not yet in love, a Sherlock who could choose his pride, who could take the pill to prove he was clever and make sure John never made it to the window to stop or save him. He knew that later in life he would have chosen to love John rather than be believed. He decided not to become that man. I think he chose poorly, myself, but I can see how - for him - it seemed better to beat a god than to love a man. More glorious, more indomitable. A triumph of freedom, and perhaps of hubris.
He chose his own doom and no one had to burn his heart out for him, he did it with open eyes. And it looks like he took out Agamemnon along the way, so hey. That's a lot of trouble saved right there :)
Haunting. Thanks so much for sharing it.
