I adore this, the atmosphere, the John-Sherlock interaction and dialogue, both familiar and a bit alien (tweaks to make the AU effective)! Your experience with violin playing (iirc) is shown in your secure use of musical terms. Thank you for not automatically calling all the melodies Vernet plays on the violin "songs"; as you likely know, a composer of the period would most likely use terms like "air" or "melody" or name the intended genre "aria", "chorus", "duet", etc. Yes, I'm being a snob, but no competent composer of this period would be using layperson's terms of the turn of the 21st century. /end music historian's rant
For some reason, the touches you give John really stand out: "John folds his hands in his lap and smiles just politely enough to be rude." I can see that expression! Like the one John gives Mycroft in TRF?
Question: is this set in 1881 as well?
"John quite likes the Barber of Seville: it has only two acts."
Oh, John. BoS is a delight. You're lucky they aren't doing the Ring Cycle.
*imagines John mouthing "15 hours" in horror*

This is set in 1870-1871.
John would not enjoy that at all.
