This weekend wasn't a complete loss.
I can't really remember what I did on Saturday (I swear I have memory problems in that my folders get real dusty real fast). *dust-off* I went to the Hague on Saturday, although I didn't do all that much. Sunday I cleaned the big kitchen and the entrance (our hallway carpet is no longer rife with icky things! Woo!) and actually got food. I did some work on my thesis - nothing major, but at least it was something. I didn't, however, make those icons or knit or play Betsy. Woe.
Today's been pretty rushed.
I woke up at a decent enough time and made it in to work just over half an hour past my usual time. Right off the bat, after organizing some papers and things, Maarten (the prof who's been an absolute saint helping me with Access) came round. (He'd been sick last week and I'd been totally stumped for progress.) So we worked on making me less stupidly ignorant (partial success, because it makes sense and it's easy to follow, but leave me alone and *poof* it's all nonsensical again).
Then I went to a small colloquium of lion-livestock conflicts, which was two presentations of on-going PhD research projects (one researching Waza National Park in Cameroun and the other in Penjari National Park in Benin). As if often the case, the results were both uplifting and heart-breaking in the sense that "Yay, lions!" but "Omg, lions dead!" Seriously, there's one project with collared lions that had four out of its seven lions killed by locals in retaliation for cattle losses. Oy.
Then it was back to work with Maarten with narry a bite or a drink even though it was 2 pm by now. Then my supervisor pops in with a "Where are you?!? We have a meeting!" and I'm all, "Omg, it wasn't at 4 pm?!?" and so I rush off for that. Guys, I should be physically restrained from writing so much text in my thesis. Honestly, I do too much. Which means that I'm going to chuck out huge portions and stick them in as appendices and reduce the results tables and stick some of those in appendices too. There's one bit on morphology that I did (male's manes descriptions) that Supervisor's squeeing over and saying he'd even like to consider it for a separate article. (Also because it doesn't really have much to do with my main research.) Oy, again. But! Progress is happening, and yes, even with the Programs of Mocking Death (aka. Access and ArcView), so yay.
In other news, I've discovered the 1998 movie Playing By Heart (
Part 1, YouTube). The cast?
Just about knocks my socks off. But the bit that I'm squeeing over (and that is the only reason I found this movie) is the plotline with Gillian Anderson and Jon Stewart (
Part 1,
Part 2). There's a kissing scene - mainly off-screen in that we get a lot of back-of-the-head shots - that is certainly not helping me in my current Massive Crush state. (Fingers! In hair!) Although my favorite bit is when Jon's "Trent" is threatening to jump overboard, 'cause it sounds so like him. Guess what I'm going to watch tonight? ;)
In related news, I've discovered the upcoming movie
Nailed which is summarized as:
A small town waitress gets a nail accidentally lodged in her head causing unpredictable behavior that leads her to Washington, DC, where sparks fly when she meets a clueless young senator who takes up her cause - but what happens when love interferes with what you stand for?
But basically all you need to know is it's basically
Phineas Gage as a spunky waitress - which has me totally going because neurological conditions are fascinating - and has Jon Stewart. Oh baby, I'm sold.
