I wonder why there was no jury trial. I would have much rather seen it decided by 12 of their peers.

The defendants get to choose. They chose to have the verdict decided by a judge rather than a jury.
Which was probably a legally-savvy move. I don't know that they could have gotten a fair trial in front a jury of their peers.
Not that I think this trial was fair, mind you.
