Ok so sunday the most exciting thing that happened was watching the
Mexico
v. Argentina soccer match. If you care nothing about soccer dont bother
reading...
Ok so the game was brutal and intense. Soccer is one of those sports
that
you watch and normaly it is well known who will win at least a good 5
min
before the game actually ends. Its a hard game to score in and it can
get a
little boring to watch with little goals scored and the ball
consistantly
being passed from one end of the field to the other. this game however,
defied that theory.
Both teams were more than equally matched for the game. The game was a
consistant 0:0 score all the way into over time...
Mexico played to their best as did Argentina. I was personaly torn as
to who
to go for but in the end, blood is thicker so i was hoping Mexico would
advance to the Final round of the tournament to meet Brazil. After
watching
this game it is obvious who will win the Confederation Cup and it wont
be
Brazil for once.
Mexico braught a street style soccer game to the field. It was not a
traditional game play, The Mexican players showed off their foot skills
with
short trick passes and made heavy use of what i like to call their "Air
Game" (what i mean by air game is that the offense would consistently
send
the ball up field in the air to where the hope was that one of the
players
would be able to jump over the Argentinian defense and get the ball in
the
net with their head). However smart, this was it was innacurate. Many
of
the shots were to far up or to the left or right, etc. Whever Mexico
did
make good use of ground balls, they took too much time in setting up
the
shot and Argentina's defense quickly cleaned up.
Argentina's style was more i guess traditional and relyed less on
passing
and foot skill and more on ability to out run and dominate the smaller
mexican player. Argentina was faster at getting shots on goal however
they
were not accurate enough or they went directly into the goalies hands.
Both teams were equally agressive and i guess the other word to
discribe it
is dirty. Had either team been playing another team who wasnt as well
matched in terms of aggresiveness and acting capabilities, both teams
would
have lost the game in Fouls and penalties. Mexico ended up with 4
yellow
cards, 2 of which went to the same player and resulted in a red card
and the
players expulsion for the remainder of the game. Argentina had 2 yellow
cards and one red. The game also dragged because of the countless cheap
shots and fouls that were commited however they were not carded
offsenses.
No team was called on fouling the other in the box which would have led
to a
penalty kick. Had that happened the game would have ended much sooner.
At half time the possesion percentages for both teams was unbelieveably
close at 48% for Mexico and 52% for Argentina. This pattern continued
past
the aloted 90min of the soccer game and dragged into overtime. The way
overtime works is that there is an additional 30 min played where ther
are 2
15 minute halfs.
It was in overtime where the midfield game for both teams disapeared.
The
ball went back and forth into the other teams side of the field and the
strategy became to pull the midfield back into the box and do
everything
possible to prevent the other team from scoring. Both teams did the
exact
same thing and took advantage of it. It was so obvious that everyone
was
tired even the officials who's red jerseys with the Fifa emblem were
drenched in sweat. It was like watching whores in church.
Finnaly in the 103rd minute Mexico came up from their box and outran
the
ball through midfield and into Argentina's box. Player number 3
(Salcido)
had a nice shot to gaol that passed the gaoly and sank into the upper
left
hand corner of the net. The shot was hard and on target and even when
one of
argentina's defensemen tried to deflect the ball, it was pointless; the
ball
tipped off the defensemans foot with more force and only stopped after
hitting the net. Mexico's coach was fun to watch as he stood on the
sideline
with jeans, cowboy boots, a dress shirt with an undone tie, and a navy
blue
blazzer. As he saw his players had broken the tie, he pulled out his
Malboros and lit up on the field. I'm dying to see Bill Parcel (cowboys
head
coach), Bill Belichik (Patriots Head coach) and John Madden (Former
Okland
Raiders Coach, now football announcer) to do the same. Then again i
guess
its kind of funny to see Andy Reid (Eagles head coach) in a black
warm-up
suit inhaleing a cheesesteak before every game on the sidelines.
Mexico's lead however didnt last long. Argentina Answered Mexico's goal
4
minutes latter in the 107th minute.
The game dragged into the 120th min with a few mini heart attack
moments but
no more goals. However Argentina started to outplay (or really outlast)
Mexico.
The game went into Penalty kicks, The way the penalty kicks work is
that
each team is given direct shots on goal within the box and the team
best of
five wins. Only two players are allowed in the box this point, the
designated kicker from one team and the goalie from the opposing.
Both Argentina and Mexico scored 5 out of 5 penalty kicks. The kicks
continued until one of the shots was either missed or blocked.
