And it's not the first time I've wondered this. Why don't books have commercials?
I mean, they do other types of marketing, and more than just an announcement that 'such and such top-seller is on sale'. Posters, magazines, online banners, websites, ect.. Perhaps television commercials would be expensive and hokey, so few arguments there, but has anyone tried drawing a couple of still frames of scenes from the book (or simple animations), to go along with a spoken narration? Put it on YouTube! I know for a fact that a lot of writer-friends I have also are involved with illustrations, and even if they aren't, there are plenty of people in the art community that are dubbed with the 'geek' title right alongside us, their literary compatriots. The resources are there.
I don't read quite as much as I let on. Part of this is because when I see a new book, there's a hesitancy to approach it eerily similar to my social phobias. Is it a friendly book? Will I invest too much in its pages, and be let down somewhere in the middle? What am I getting myself into? The backs of the books are often misleading, but they help me overcome this to some degree. Put it to a trailer akin to a video game, on the other hand, and I think my attention would be caught much sooner.
So why haven't I seen it?
