Appearance

Basic Overall Physical Description: Ben’s most prominent quality is, perhaps, his hair. Its… er, a little huge. He doesn’t WANT it to be, but it has a mind of its own. It’s a dark, dirty blonde, though sometimes it decided to be a little lighter or darker. It refuses to lie flat, or in the same direction, no matter how much he brushes it. By now, Ben’s given up, and lets it do whatever the hell it wants.

He’s got very light bright blue eyes. He has a habit of looking at the floor when he’s embarrassed, and blushes a lot. Ben is a little gangly, but not much, and it often seems like his body is too big for him.

Height: 6’ 1”, mostly, but it depends on the day. Sometimes he says he’s 6’ 2”.

Dress: Ben has a rather grungey, punkish look to him. He's NEVER seen without his converse trainers, the same pair he's been wearing since he was fourteen or so. Most of the time, he wears t-shirts, usually ones that look like they're older than he is. He has a fondness for shirts with his favorite bands on them, though most are hard to find. Most of the time, his shirts are a little tighter, as he buys them a size smaller because he doesn’t like feeling ‘baggy.’ He's rarely seen in anything other than jeans, but has one pair that he never seems to change out of, faded and full of rips and holes.

Build:  Athletic, almost, though he never works out or anything. He should be about five-hundred pounds, really, but he’s thin and even a little toned, though he doesn’t bother to figure out why that is.

Manner of Speech:  Ben has a very low, deep, husky voice, sort of… grainy. He spent most of his childhood in America so he’s acquired a bit of a mutt accent, an odd mix of Irish and American accents. He usually speaks quietly, even when fighting.

Manner of Movement: awkward but arrogant at times, likes to curl one leg up to his chest

Physical Health (Fit? Strong? Bad eating habits?) Ben is a horrible, horrible eater. His sweet tooth pretty much controls what he does, and his fondness for chocolate is, um… unrivalled? He’s easily bribed with it, and will do whatever is asked of him. WHATEVER is asked of him.. When there’s chocolate involved (especially if its Frogs), he has no boundaries.

Ben doesn’t work out, either. The way he eats, he should be huge. Somehow, though, he stays rather skinny. He’s also very strong, tough, even, and is a good physical fighter.

Personality

Basic Personality:
Although he was once a happy young boy, Ben’s all grown up- with an attitude to match. Many people are annoyed by his sharp tongue and sarcastic wit, which can be very harsh. He’s not a man of many words, and is usually drawn and brooding. Stupidity and slowness doesn’t sit well with him, and is known to interrupt with a biting comment. He has a short fuse, and it takes little to make him angry or engage in a fight. Rules aren’t important to Ben, and teachers normally plan detentions for him before he even gets one. He doesn’t give a second thought to schoolwork, but secretly hopes to be a freelance writer for wizarding papers or magazines in the future. He keeps the softer, likeable, intelligent side of himself very well hidden. Only those closest to him would see his potential if he got up off his lazy arse and ditched the bad boy attitude.

Despite his initial coldness, Ben is a good friend to those who bother to stick around. Though he appears to be lazy and slack off in classes, he’s actually quite intelligent. He’s never one to finish a project of apply himself, though if given a push by the right person, could excel in classes. He does, however, love to read and can often be found in a deserted corner of the castle with a book propped open on his lap. It’s very hard for Ben to express his feelings, and usually tries to avoid situations where gut-spilling is required. He cares deeply for those closest to him, however, and would do anything to protect them. He does, for reasons he can’t explain, feel a sense of loyalty to his house. Before Hogwarts, he swore he’d never be one of those banner-carrying, song-singing, wild supporters at Quidditch Matches or other school activities, but to his dismay, he’s now a banner-carrying, song-singing, wild supporter of Gryffindor… reluctantly, of course.

He’s a very unexpected match to Gryffindor, but the Sorting Hat believed there was something more to him, something that many didn’t see. His Gryffindor qualities shine through in difficult situations. He’d save everyone else before himself, and would hate any credit for what he did. He’s loyal and would stay with a friend or family member to the end, and is very dependable. He’s also quite brave- all these years of pranks and trouble actually helped! In addition, when something is very important to him, he becomes extremely driven and dedicated, not resting until the job is done. While his attitude suggests Slytherin, he lacks the cunning and ambition to be in the house.

He doesn’t dig actual relationships with girls, but he’s always up for some fun. He’s always had luck with girls, whether it’s because of his charming attitude, air of mystery, or quiet, brooding nature.  He really wouldn’t mind a relationship, secretly, if a girl was brave of dedicated enough.
Ben has two very different sides. To most, he's tough and intimidating, a complete jerk and bully. He likes to fight and is good at it, and likes taunting people and making enemies. He's not really biased- he'd hate someone from any house! Ben doesn’t feel a need to be nice to girls, either, like some boys do. He hates bubbly, flirty, loud and silly girls, they drive him up the wall. Too friendly or too polite sets him off, and the insults would start to roll out quickly.

Most people would think he was a stupid screw-up, seeing as he rarely attends class. when he does, he mouths off and causes trouble and gets kicked out or tossed into detention often. Ben appears to be very tough, not caring about anything, the classic movie rebel. He smokes, he fights, he wears a leather jacket older than he is.

However, that's really a facade. Ben is really very shy and very guarded, mostly because of his horrible relationship with his parents. His father, especially, hates him. He demeans Ben constantly, making obvious the fact that he's only a disappointment, that he'll never amount to anything, and that he resents him very much. Ben took all of this to heart, especially since its been that way since he was little, and has come to the realization that if people expect nothing from him in the beginning, he can't let anyone down.

While he appears to be the epitome of arrogant and self-centered, Ben is VERY much the opposite. He has a horrible inferiority complex, leaving him second-guessing everything he does. He's grown to believe that his father is correct about him, that he's not worth anyone’s time. The tough rebel act is seamless, but was required. Once he was a young teenager, Ben stopped coming home, or would leave unexpectedly. He often crashed at the houses of friends in a very tough neighborhood. He needed to be strong and scary and dangerous, and needed a way to protect himself from any further blows to his rather non-existent ego.

He's guarded to a ridiculous extent, letting very few in at all. Before, the only people who really knew him were Avis and Merlin, his best friends. Ben can ease up a little around people he likes, but still seems rather mysterious and volatile. Its hard for him to carry on a conversation, but he tries when he wants to, or when he thinks its important. His social skills are seriously lacking, obviously, and Ben refrains from doing things with a lot of people. He's usually found in his dorm or hidden in the library, and likes to skip meals and eat in the kitchens.

Another surprise is the fact that he's actually very intelligent. Ben is an unusually fast reader and absolutely loves books. He reads constantly, usually thick classic novels. His goal is to become an author, though very few know that, even those very close to him. Ben doesnt really think he'll be able to accomplish that, though, so he'll settle for working at the Daily Prophet or another muggle newspaper.

He's horribly awkward, all the time. Ben has a habit of pulling at his hair or rubbing at his neck when he's embarrassed or unsure of something, and has a slight blushing problem when he gets that way. A sure way to get him like that is to compliment him, which pretty much shuts him down. Ben can't receive compliments like a normal person, he always assumes its a lie. He has rare moments of confidence and spontaneity, during which he seems to become a little bolder and more sure of himself.

He doesn't drink. He's a goner when it comes to chocolate. He only wears dark-colored socks. He hates his hair, as it never does what he wants it to. He has no understanding of physical attraction, and the fact that he's good-looking is completely lost on him.

He is, essentially, the most dysfunctional male ever :P

Goals/Dreams: He’d like to become an author and publish a novel, but doesn’t really think he can do that. He’d settle for being a reporter for the Prophet, but would like to write about things that actually matter, and would actually prefer a muggle newspaper.
Fears: Flobberworms, Sex, Girls, Flirting, being physical in the... er, affectionate sense
Likes: Books, chocolate, Motown, old music
Dislikes: …. Flobberworms, Sex, Girls, Flirting. Being complimented. He also hates bubbly blonde girls and stupid jocks. And Troy Frogley.
First Impression: JERK. Rebel. Git.
Strengths: Writing, he’s a really fast reader, er… fighting. He likes that a lot.
Flaws: RIDICULOUSLY insecure, a bit of a hothead, rebellious, self-hating, lazy, klutzy, horrible handwriting

Family

Parents: Liam Connelly- Pureblood
Elizabeth Connelly- Muggle
Sibling(s): None!
Children: None!
Family History:  Ben was born in a small village in Ireland, home to less than five-hundred people. It was the hometown of his muggle mother, Elizabeth. She was a kind, beautiful woman, although very forgetful and quite ditzy. Liam, Ben’s pureblood father, fell in love with her immediately after seeing her stumble out of a pub completely pissed on a cold January night. He’d run over to her, threw his cloak around her shoulders and bought her a room at the local Inn.

Being the proper, upstanding, testosterone-possessing young man he was, he returned to her the next day to find her awake and nearly sober. She thanked him kindly for appearing in her room, for she didn’t remember any of the past night’s events. After a short and not at all exaggerated summary of the previous night, she threw her arms around Liam’s neck and kissed his cheek, wailing about how kind it was that he saved her from that giant man-eating ostrich.

Within a year, the couple married, Elizabeth discovering Liam’s magical abilities after he’d turned her hair green. He soon gained a job in the Department of International Magical Cooperation and the young couple popped over to America while Liam perused his career.

At his mother’s request, Ben attended Muggle Preschool and Elementary school. He was a very good student, and excelled in language and literature.

The small family stayed in the United States until two weeks after Ben’s ninth birthday, returning home to Ireland after Liam received a promotion.
