So-
Tuesday's over. Yesterday I had too much fun figuring this program out that, lo and behold, it's one am and I didn't start my paper. So I went to bed. I kind of knew that I didn't have to have a draft, and it turns out Mr. Clark didn't show up to school anyway, so all's good. Round 9 of our laugh-of-a-simulation game in American Problems Class: the dominating group (us, duh) DESTROYED. There's no hope for us coming back in round ten with an entirely new country. We just hope we can fuck shit up for those who fucked our shit up. Revenge is a bitch, unless you're the revenger. They won't even find that group's teeth let alone enough DD to win the game.
Today after school I practiced some Mathletes stuff with Amanda D. (woo hoo!) and tomorrow we leave school early for the JJC competition. That's from like noon - seven and then after I head to Chicago for Phantom Of The Opera with Foreign Language Club. I'm pretty excited, as I've heard about Phantom for my entire life yet haven't seen it. Chalk one up for cultural understanding. On Thursday I am heading to Second City with Drama Club, and I'm uber pumped about that, because, like Phantom, I've heard much about this comedy group yet have never gotten to see them.
"I am really looking forward to the ab workout from laughing." hahahahaha, silly "I don't eat" girls form my grade. ::Sigh:: I can't help them if they won't admit they're sick. At least that wasn't random.
Friday I'm headin' to the Field Museum to talk to the volunteer coordinator to see why the hell she hasn't called me back. Or something. Yeah, but I'm looking to get involved maybe once a week over the summer, giving tours, explaining exhibits, anything they ask me to do. That reminds me of that song: "I would do anything for love, but I won't do that." I think it's 80's style... anyone have any idea what "that" is? Anyway, there's this new Chinese dynasty exhibit going on, and I'm pumped to go because I just read up on a lot of China's history in this past National Geographic.
Speaking of doing stuff over summer: here are my possible plans. Well, for the past 3 years I've worked at the Lemont Park District as a lifeguard, which totally kicks ass. If you can look past the whole "responsibility for a whole lotta people's lives" aspect of the job, they really don't expect much out of you. You have to sit in a chair in the sun and play god, yelling at people as you overlook them Big Brother style. Not bad. We have breaks ALL THE TIME as it's required by our guarding lisencing agency. So on breaks we play volleyball or swim or eat tons of food or read or just lay lethargic in the air-conditioned guard office. Supposedly we're supposed to pull weeds or some shit, hahahaha, I think they were serious too. It's really easy to get days off, and to pick up extra hours as well, and my 4th summer's pay will be better than ever. I think I'll be bumped up to 8 dollars, actually.
Okay but I interviewed at Argonne National Labs-where they made the first A-bomb- to work their pool. They pay a WHOLE LOT better than the LPD, but the job is more serious as it's not a public facility. The best scientists in the world could be swimming int his pool, and you'd better believe they want them impressed. So, I think this job involves a lot of cleaning and looking professional. I'll also have to teach swim lessons (not bad at all) and I guess the boss is a bitch? Hmmm. But, it's like $11+ dollars an hour. Another downside: I guess I'm supposed to be available 7 days a week, every week, from 9am-8pm. I don't know how the schedule will work, so I'm going to wait until I hear more details before I decide on this one. Hey, they nature of business allows me to say, hey fuck you I don't like these terms, I"m not taking your job. Sorry. Also, there are only 6 guards on staff, and they like having 4 working at any given time. That definitely sounds to me like a 40+ hour a week time commitment. Which, eh, if the job doesn't blow, won't be bad. I really need the money for school, and I'd be off early enough to go out at night. I'll feel bad about declining the position anyhow, because my mom's good friend pulled some strings to get me the interview, etc. Oh well.
I also applied for a student-research position at Argonne Labs. It's a paid position, a 9-5 job, 5 days a week. I have no idea if I'll be a lab bitch, or if I'll gain much research experience, if I'll be only typing, or whatever, but I can't think this would be a bad choice. From what I've read, I become apart of a current research team at the huge campus located only minutes from my home (our drinking water has radiation in it. damn labs.. we have an "unusual" cluster of childhood leukemia here in Lemont.... hmmm..). If I get accepted to this highly competitive program, I'm going to take it. I mean, I would volunteer to be on a research team at ANL, but if they want to pay me, so be it. I think it's $350 a week or something. Not bad.
ALSO! I am going to take a black and white photography class at the Institute of the Art Institute of Chicago. I'm really pumped about this one.. I dig photography a lot, and I'm not all that bad at it, but I kind of just take lots of pictures and hope I get lucky and have nice ones turn out. With the class, I'm going to learn how to compose the shots to look just how I want, how to develop my own film in a darkroom, and I guess everything in between. It's on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6pm to 9pm on the Michigan Ave. campus. This is priority, I'm going to make my job decisions around this class. They MUST submit to my schedule! It's $800 and my mom offered to pay for half, though she thinks the fee is a little over-the-top. So, I'm in a scramble to find $400.. no more amazon.com orders at 2a.m., no more eating out when there's food in the house, no more $4 cups of coffee. Gas is a bitch, especially when your car dumps it onto the street at a constant rate. Yeah, I need a new car, too. And to save money for school. I hate workin' for the man, I hate having to have a job, but hey, a man's gotta eat, right (or have a laptop and some things for my dorm)?
There is a place in Downer's that teaches
Hapkido.. a Korean martial art (on the link, check out "meaning" and "basic principles"). I have read up on all the different martial arts offered around here, and also looked at all my prospective schools to see which I could continue to learn once I go away.. well, it happens the one that I'm most interested in is actually available at most of my prospective schools. I really dig the fact that this is a martial "art" and not a martial sport (like kickboxing). It's really old and varies from place to place, though the basic principles are the same. I'm interested in learning some physical and mental balance, as well as some self-defense. A few friends of mine have claimed that the self-defense come second to the art.. which is definitely fine by me. Though, I'm positive you'll be much more equipped to defend yourself by understanding the art compared to someone who does not. Even if it's totally mental, it can't hurt. I need to be able to hold my own, especially as I plan to backpack to various parts of the world. I don't need to be taken advantage of.
I just got derailed. I went on aim, and now I don't remember where I was to go after this. grrr aim. Anyway, I think this is enough for tonight. Through LJ and aim I've put off my paper another hour and a half or so... woo hoo! I need to allocated my time more wisely... I always wonder why I can't read all the stuff I have in a line on my shelf. Maybe I should uninstall aim like Besty......
Do it,
Brad
