True Blood 1.03, 1.04

I was very excited to watch more True Blood last night. I ended up watching both “Mine” and “Escape From Dragon House”. I like how they used Tara and Sam to explain Sookie’s internal monologue about why it’s nice/easier to be around Bill since she can’t hear his thoughts. It was a good choice to not have her say it out loud like that. I’ve found that sometimes the dialogue is spot on and very realistic and sometimes it’s stilted and almost like a high school play. Bill’s talk about “magic” animating vampires was just…ugh. I found it cringe-worthy. Interesting that the show never even tried to go with the cover story that vampirism is a disease and just went straight for the cold, dead truth.

I do like the small-towniness of all the secondary and tertiary players. The fact that they all know each other and all seem to be well drawn, even if they’re stereotypes, really helps with the world building. Sure, some of the actors are…less talented but hey, maybe the people are just like that, you know?

The expansion of roles from the text is fantastic. I loved the priapism storyline for Jason - it was absolutely hilarious and brought both Lafayette and Tara in on the action in fun ways. I even liked Tara and Sam’s fling. Very believable. Not sure about Sam writhing about on dead Dawn’s bedclothes but hey, he does have a heightened sense of smell. Heh.

The highlight of this pair of episodes was obviously finally going to Shreveport. Yay Pam! Yay Eric! I thought they were cast perfectly. Really, really nicely done. Fangtastia itself seemed too tame to me though. I guess it’s just one of those sad spots where the adaptation can never live up to the imagination. But still, can’t wait for more of those wacky kids!
