After watching “The First Taste” last night I can officially declare that I love this show. That quickly did it shake off all the questionable elements of Pilotitus and get busy with the storytelling. It’s really cool how much more detailed the adaptation of a book into a series can be as compared to a movie. I mean, duh, right, because there’s more time and all. But it’s being done so well! I was completely, forgive the expression, sucked in and anticipating the next chapter when oops! End of episode!
I really like that they made Tara be Lafayette’s cousin. That fits her into the world even more snugly and allows for expansion by continuing occasional focus on her. I found myself really uncomfortable with her crush on Jason until I realized that was just because it was real. She seems too cool to be hung up on a hobag like him but that’s the rub. She *knows* she’s too cool and can’t help herself. It’s such a nice touch.
I personally am hung up on wondering if viewers picked up on certain clues without knowing…things. There was a pretty obvious one in Sam’s office but would that even be noticed if you weren’t looking for it? There was a much more subtle one about the killer that actually might have gone by if the details of the book weren’t fresh in your head.
There’s a frank grossness to the vampire stuff they’ve shown so far. It’s not all sparkles and declarations of love. Sookie was covered in blood and she looked NASTY. Next thing you know her face is cleaned off and Bill is licking away the blood. That’s disgusting and perfect and I’m glad they went there.
And Gran continues to be awesome. I love her.
