Farscape: Strange Detractors was like Farscape’s Greatest Hits. I loved every frelling second of it. You had your psychotic false reality blur into alien real reality. You had your everyone going completely fahrbot and trying to kill each other. You had your shrink rays and fun with sizes. And you had your puking. Lots and lots of puking. Good times.
But first: the art. It was so fantastic!! I’m so relieved that I can finally love this comic continuation with no reservations. Will Sliney has hit upon the perfect comic book versions for each of the characters. They retain the essence of each individual without being a slave to photorealism. It’s marvelous. Their personalities shine through and on occasion the pose or expression will leap off the page and suddenly transform into the live action version right in front of my eyes. I noticed it especially with Chiana when she was in shadow and her eyes were hidden. There was something about the way she was drawn there that drew me in so much that it was like I was looking at Gigi Edgley herself all made up on set. Amazing. I hope this team stays with the series for the remaining titles now that they’ve hit upon a winner.
I don’t know that I have much to say about the script that I haven’t already said. Keith R.A. DeCandido continues to amaze me with his spot-on dialogue and phrasing. The words on the page are “heard” by my eyes because they are such perfect matches to the characters. I had a lot of fun with the story, too. It was sort of like old home week with all the character revisitations. In some ways it reminded me of bringing back Furlow in the third season. I figured that Sikozu would show up when that other Kalish girl was heavily featured on the commerce planet. I rolled my eyes at first but then was won over with her continued awesomeness. I forgot how much I liked how she deals with Crichton. Ew, Grunchlk but I suppose it makes sense that he’d have survived since he does work with Diagnosians. Interesting snippets of Grayza and of the Scarran Emperor. Obviously they still have roles to play in this continuing saga. Totally my favorite episode of this new season so far.
