Haifa and Harare, July 2008- In September 2008 Palestinian Gay Women (ASWAT) and the Gays and Lesbians of Zimbabwe (GALZ), both lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, transexual, Queer, Questioning and Intersex (LGBTQI) organisations from the Global South, will embark on an international fundraising tour of the United States of America, the United Kingdom, Canada.

ASWAT and GALZ exist in countries facing similar situations of violence, harassment and persecution. Where the LGBTQI community are treated with unequal human rights and in a lot of cases no human rights whatsoever. The queer community in both countries exist under daily threat of judgement and brutality.

These organisations have been built within communities that lack understanding of sexuality and gender identity. They come together as advocates for the rights of (LGBTQI) women, establish communities for gays and lesbians, host talks with funding agencies, work with the media and press, give lectures on university campuses, colleges and other interest groups and individuals and to mobilise resources for our work, hence advocating and outreaching on the local, national, regional and international level.

We will highlight the challenges that LGBTQI women experience in hostile environments by singling out the violence affecting women, and the inability of many to enjoy their rights to bodily integrity and sexual citizenship. We strive to provide a safe environment for LGBTQI women within our societies and seek to create a culture of acceptance and tolerance towards the issue of homosexuality.
