That Conor Oberst kid we all used to love so much

You know, I'm not really a big fan of Bright Eyes latest efforts but I have to say that this track off of 'I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning' is maybe one of my favorite songs by him. And this is a great performance of said song.

Came across this in my recent re-visiting of my favorite lyrical, what I would consider, masterminds in a search for inspiration. There's some good independent music still coming out these days but as my absolute favorite lyricists ever - Conor Oberst, Rivers Cuomo, John K. Samson, E, Tom Gabel, Ben Gibbard - get a little older and mellower/more mainstream there sure doesn't seem to be anyone stepping up to the plate to replace them in just the song-writing department. I feel like peoples lyrics tend to be pretty cute these days but lacking in insight. It's like songwriters are trying to replicate the feel of these great lyricists without actually bothering to give it any actual substance - something I am surely guilty of myself. Yes, let us all make references to all night diners and coffee houses and drinking away our problems but not actually relate it to anything! Boom, indie rock tune.
