STATEMENT OF THE RUSSIAN EMBASSY IN CONNECTION WITH THE EUROVISION CONTEST INTERMISSION SKETCH
March 20, 2009
The Swedes have always been known in Russia as people with impeccable taste and a sense of propriety. In this case, these lofty qualities have failed and deserted the authors of the Eurovision Contest intermission sketch.
Like you, we Russians love to sing, dance, satirize ourselves and the ugly things, poke and make fun, but in no way national or state symbols should be involved in the process. Similar situation as applied to Sweden’s National Anthem, for example, is unthinkable of in Russia because we pay due respect to the symbols of national sovereignty of all foreign nations. This is not debatable.
With the apologies of the producer accepted, the matter is closed.
