Other random info that I should've probably included in my first post.
Things that are important for a digicam: 1. Optical Zoom - ~3x has been the standard for a bit. Digital zooms are absolutely worthless in the vast majority of circumstances. It makes your pictures appear very pixelated and low quality. I don't even bother looking at specs for digital zoom
2. Number of megapixels - Right now I just have a 5mp, but will be upgrading to the 10.1 that I mentioned above.
3. Lens quality - no matter how many megapixels a camera has they won't mean anything if you're attempting to shoot through a crappy lens. Carl Zeiss lenses are some of the better ones you can find for your price range.
4. Battery life - whether on a rechargeable or regular old AA's. Better rechargeable's can take about 400+ shots per charge.
5. Memory - SD cards are the standard, if you stick to them you can get them anywhere and they're usually considerably cheaper than other, less popular options like CompactFlash, XD, MiniSD, and Sony's suckfest MemoryCard.
Hope that's helpful, I've gotten pretty familiar with digital cameras in the last few years.
