Prompt 72: Photograph
Blacknened, creased edges encased two beaming faces, smooth in their tranquility, exuberant with youth and health. The two lads were standing side by side, their gazes obediently locked on the lens.
I studied them carefully: they were clearly united by some kind of family tie. They shared the slightly rounded shape of their jaw, the dark brown hair, the paler hazel shade of the irises. Moreover, they had probably benefitted from the same education pattern. Admirably still despite their evident impatience, the brothers kept their countenance respectfully earnest.
The older - and considerably taller - had his left hand on the other boy's right shoulder, as if to steady him. I could indeed notice how the younger's wide eyes were shining with something akin to suspicion in front of the camera, the very single shadow of abnormality in his behaviour. Around them, a country landscape, some distant houses and verdant hills whose uneven contour appeared from behind lined up trees.
I placed the worn photograph back where I had found it - on my fellow-lodger's desk, next to the old pocket-watch I had analyzed a few hours earlier. I had examined it thoroughly - but apparently I had failed to observe doctor Watson's harrowing grief, when he was given the small envelope that contained both items - just one week before.
