OMGZ RHYTHM TENGOKU
That pretty much sums up my weekend. If you have a GBA or DS and 30 bux, do yourself a favor and buy this goddamn game. It's a rhythm (dur) and music game from the Warioware team and is the most wickedly addictive little game I've ever played. The fact that it's entirely Japanese is irrelevant.
The games analyst from Wired said that the chances of this game being released in the states were somewhere between slim and none, otherwise I would have just waited - I'm perfectly happy to wait for the US "Ouendan" (sic?) sequal, and if I really like it I can always import the original. But since it's a GBA game and they're kind of trying to phase those out, I sprung for the import. It's a music game, so the language really isn't a big issue. Like, there's some jokes I'm sure I'm missing out on, and the tutorials are a little hard to follow and I have trouble accessing some of the (plentiful) bonus material because it's difficult to navigate the menues, but ultimately it's a music game.
It is, however, very definitely a Japanese game with a capital "J." A lot of the mini-games center around Japanese institutions that American gamers might not dig - in one game you're an old man parcticing kanji caligraphy and you have to time the brush strokes to the music, in another you're a red-haired, wide-eyed American girl trying to keep up with the others in some sort of festival kimono clapping dance. Not exactly what American consumers look for in a video game.
But it's probably the most interesting music game I've ever seen, and only slightly less rewarding than Guitar Hero. The music is totally catchy and there's lots of humor that you can get and appreciate without knowing what the fuck is going on with the text. Also, the Japanese box looks very cool and it comes with tiny little stickers so you can decorate your console (which I will do when I buy a Lite). Highly, highly reccomended. Do yourself a favor and get it (it was on sale at YesAsia.com for 30 bux with free shipping, so it's equal to or cheaper than a regular GBA game at like target) or at least wait until someone makes a ROM and does a fan translation and emulates it. Please.
Other than that, it's pretty quiet around here. Saw Little Miss Sunshine with Gia and Cady on Friday, also highly reccomended. Maureen came by on Saturday to hang out before she goes to Alaska (ALASKA!). Kelly thinks she might be fired for writing a story about Nazis, which is pretty much bullshit. Was it a wise editorial decision? No. But the story was fair and interesting and you can tell it took a LOT of work for her to write. Add another pile of shit onto the stinking poo tower of poor morale at SV Newspapers, guys. Thanks.
Okay. It's 10:30. Time to work. What a crock.
