I wrote this to my mom and it pretty much summarizes where I am at:
All is well here. The first day of classes were very good and I enjoy proffessor Nalibow. He is a very cool guy and I stand to learn a great deal from him. I also took my first Chinese class today. It will be a lot of hard work and I talked to her regarding studying in China junior year. While it will be difficult and I may have to take courses 1 and 51 at the same time I should be able to make that work. I also talked to McKenna and he has no qualms sending me to Moscow next year. At this point the two years abroad will present no problems.
The Chinese courses started very simply and was a typical high school "here is how I grade you" type instance where the Russian 141 (200 is the final Russian class) we started running and I already have 8 pages of homework. I have managed to do them and am at the head of the class with another Russian native out of the class of four however it will be difficult and it is obvious that he will expect a great deal from us.
My meal plan is holding up quite well although I am mostly eating at the marche located across from the dorm which runs on a point system. I have yet to use my blocks although I plan on starting to use them to better balance my plan. Beyond that I have already started my science of cutting corners and simply fill my thermos with water from the bubbler rather than pay the absorbitant $2 for a liter of Dasani. My credit card bill has been payed in full so that is not an issue. I always like to stay on top of my bills and do it all online.
My finances are doing quite well. I applied for work study with Dr. McKenna today as I feel that will ultimately benfit me the most of all my options. Also he is paying me a rate of $9 an hour so I find that entirely reasonable as typically the maximum pay scale for a freshman is $7.10.
My roomate as it turns out is a very kind person and I like him. While I have seen very little of him he seems down to earth and ultimately our relationship should be fine.

Beyond this I wrote Jan a huge e-mail last night and I plan on writing an even more extensive one for you. I adore you so much make sure to look for my e-mail.
