Title:Hewie
Words:587
Warnings: None this time.
Summery: Takuro finds a dog tied to a tree outside the hospital.

Hewie

They had never been so glad to see the light of day before. Everyone practically ran out of the double doors. All except for Sabitsuki, who took very small steps into the outside world. She clung to Urotsuki’s arm as they walked further and further away from the hospital.

Sabitsuki kept glancing back to that horrible place.

“What’s wrong, Sabi?” Urotsuki asked.

“It’s just… I’ve never been outside the hospital before,” Sabitsuki said. “This feels so strange... so liberating.”

“Isn’t freedom great?” Urotsuki said.

“…Yeah, it is. I’m finally able to breathe the outside air.”

Hiroshi glanced ahead.

“Hey, is that… a dog?” he asked.

A big white dog with pointed ears was tied to a tree a short ways ahead of them.

Takuro paused. A flash of recognition crossed his face.

“Hewie!” he called.

The dog’s ears perked up. He began to bark excitedly.

“Takuro, you know this dog?” Mika asked.

“He’s Hatsuki’s pet,” he said. He stopped  down to the dog’s level. “Hey, boy.”

Hewie was thinner than Takuro remembered. Some of his ribs were showing.

How long had he been tied to the tree for?

“Oh,” was all she said.

“Didn’t you break up with Hatsuki, though?” Hiroshi asked.

Takuro paused.“…Yeah.”

“Takuro, we can’t take a dog with us,” Mika began.

She had a point.

“Hey, Madotsuki, can I borrow your knife?” Takuro asked.

“Are you going to free him or use it put him out of his misery? He can’t survive tied to that tree,” Madotsuki said.

Takruo thought for a moment before he took the knife from her hand.

He sliced the rope.  “Go on.”

The dog sat down and looked at him expectantly.

“Go on.”

The dog did not budge.

“Doggie!” Urotsuki exclaimed as she approached him. “Hey, can you roll over?”

He did. Urotsuki proceeded to give him a belly rub.

“Takuro, what did you say his name was?” Urotsuki asked.

“Hewie.”

“Hi, Hewie! I’m Urotsuki! Nice to meet you!”

Cautiously, Madotsuki approached the big dog. Gently, she put her hand down and starched his ears.

“Aww, he likes you!” Urotsuki said.

Madotsuki smiled slightly. “He’s a good boy.”

“Sabi! Come pet the puppy!” Urotsuki called. “He’s really nice!”

“…Is it really okay?” she asked as she stretched her hand out. Slowly, she stroked his side. “He’s not… scared of me...”

“Takuro, what are you going to do about him?” Hiroshi asked.

“I feel I should take him with us. I owe it to Hatsuki to look after him.”

“Did you listen to me at all? He’s a dog. He’d only slow us down. Besides, what if she comes back for him?” Mika asked.

“Do you think Hatsuki is in this place?” Takeshi asked. His voice sounded panicked.

“She must be if her dog’s here,” Mika said. The bitterness was hard to ignore.

“Hatsuki would never come to a place like this!” Takuro snapped.

“You don’t know that,” Mika countered. “We came to this place after all and we’re all innocent!”

“I just know!”

“Oh boy,” Takeshi muttered. “Duck and cover.”

“Then why did you break up with her if she was such a pure girl? If she was as much of a saint she wouldn’t have-!”

“Stop it, Mika!” Hiroshi ordered.

Takuro was silent. He looked at the ground.

“…I’m taking Hewie with us.”

“Honestly,” Mika muttered.

“Yay!” Urotsuki exclaimed. “Doggie gets to come too!”

The dog walked contently by Takuro’s side.

Was Hatsuki really in a place like this?

Dear God, what had he done to her?
