Ah, spring ... when the flowers bloom, the birds sing, the horseshoe crabs fuck ... FIELDWORK!!
So tonight I headed out onto the beach with
bottlerocket7 in tow to try to get some crab eggs. To put this in perspective, I've been out 4 times so far this month, and NOTHING. Too cold, too early, too much wind, thunderstorms .... the crabs have continually thwarted me. But tonight - oh, tonight, they made up for everything. This was fieldwork so good it was almost orgasmic (and Im sure the male crab who kept chasing me through the water agrees).
This is the beach. If only every night could look like this! Each of the little divots you see there is a nest. There were literally THOUSANDS of them, all over the beach. It was amazing!
The crabs were still spawning when we got there. This is looking down the beach, and each of the little black clumps you see is a spawning female surrounded by 3 or 4 males (the most males I've ever seen on a single female was 7). Go lady, go! :)
So here it is, 4:30 in the morning, and I'm WAY to happy to sleep. Where are boys when you need them? Damn you John!! :)
