What a long day. in fact, do I have any days AREN'T long days? Today was the start of timetabled lectures. sort of... This morning I woke early- in fact, didn't really sleep for more than couple of hours at all... bed too soft, too quiet, FAR too dark- I had no idea how much light my bedside alarm puts out. So I was up by 8. now, what I SHOULD have done was get to college at 9, and gone straight to the library to set up my college email, which must be set up from the library. Emailed to me at that address is the information about theatre trips for the coming two weeks... information ONLY accessible by email. First trip is tomorrow evening. No, I didn't go to the library first thing. I did remember to get the £20 necessary to fund these trips- the tutors forgot to collect it tho. 1-all so far.
Anyways, 10am involved the entire BATP (Theatre practice course) 1st, 2nd and 3rd years, meeting. this was LOUD. VERY loud. Still, lovely that so many people were meeting friends they'd not seen all year. Very efficient powerpoint presentation for an hour- mostly outlining what happens in each year of the course. 2nd year Rocky fan was sitting in front of me- she liked my bag... :) And was impressed I have matching PJs too! I directed her towards www.torrid.com, hopefully she'll check it out, hopefully, they'll still have Rocky stuff in stock. I'm sure that if they don't have the exact same as what I got, they'll sell something equally ROCKY-cool. We discussed Rocky and Shock Treatment, which made me reflect that of all the show-costumes I've copied, I have NOT made any accurate copies of Rocky costumes! I guess that it's done so well already, not my niche. Still, would love to do some, if we get a tour or a convention on the horizon, I'll try!
11am saw us meeting in our courses, and meeting 3rd years from our specific courses, from which we gleaned some info of what's on the horizon, namely first project is making a chemis, including basic cutting and pattern sewing, then we're free to elaborate garment in any direction we like. For some gory reason, my instinct was to go for distressed, blood-stained victim.... who knows why. would make a change from beaded or embroidered prettily. the 3rd year we were chatting to recommends bringing up sewing machine once we get going, but the real pressure is on cutting tables. During this session I got chatting to Rachel, whose sister Naomi is on the Stage Management strand, with Jenny (see? I'm learning names!) It seems that once the chaos quietens down and there's time to chat, I'm getting on pretty well with quite a few people.
Jenny and I went down to Subway for lunch- using one of the vouchers handed out at the Fresher's fair. cheap, good food, excellent thing. I still find Subway very overwhelming tho, so many choices! Especially harder when the server is not English-speaking. Not so bad in Macdonalds, were "Big Mac Meal" transcends languages, but choosing bread, meats, cheese? more cheese? what salad/dressings/what, voucher? oh, HER voucher... still, so tasty. and they have olives! yummy!
1pm was the address from the Principal, and the first time the entire 1st year have been assembled - us BATP, plus the Acting, and the Education people. Quite eerie- all the actors are required to wear all black, ALL the time. It threw the Principal half-way through his welcoming speech... he stopped and asked "WHY are you guys all wearing black? some statement?" It really was quite striking and a bit creepy. Some cute guys tho... actors always are the cute (and gay!) ones! That only took 1/2 hour, leaving us 30 mins to find the room we were in at 2. it took that long... we were in the new building, and while the room itself is finished, the main access is NOT. to get there we had to go through the backstage area of the main theatre, up a flight of stairs, along through that building, and down again.
We spent ALL afternoon in this room... first people to use it, I think. Lovely rehearsal space- all white walls, bleachers at one end. Now, we were sitting in there all afternoon. bleacher seating up on wall. DID anyone play with this new toy? no. 3 hours of sitting on the floor. Not so bad when sitting in groups and playing "getting to know you" games like chinese whispers, and making a poster describing us as a group. not comfortable when being talked at, especially at 4.30, at the back of the wall, uncomfotable, tired, too far to see or hear what's being said, and sleepy from the lack of oxygen! I tried to make notes...
Upon finally leaving at near 5, I thought DEFINITELY time to get this email account activated. I tried getting to the computers in the library between the principal's talk and the afternoon room-hunting adventure- NO chance. Unfortunately, the library closed at 4.45. grrrrrrrr. As I was walking away in some disgust, chatted to another girl who'd pretty much followed me from room to library, Viv is also doing costume construction, and also wanted to check her email. She'd read the email about theatre trips, but was planning on printing it out. No good without ccess to library. We'd been told such information would also be on the 1st year noticeboard, opposite the workshop. So, viv and I went noticeboard hunting... and we found a noticeboard. Said "FIRST YEAR MESSAGEBOARD" on it. Any useful information? Well, if you want innovative latex-type materials devisedby the US army, sure. Theatre trips? no. Anyway, Viv is lovely, and was telling me to keep busy and cheerful, and living on my own's not nearly so bad. Especially if I go for it, and make the effort to visit friends in America....
Deciding to take Viv's advice, I wandered down to the cinema just be "Ye Olde Swisse Cottage", and see if they were screening Kinky Boots. This being 5.15, with a 6pm or 8.30 screening. I got a ticket for 6pm, and indulged in a panini and frescato at Costa- who are now entirely non-smoking! entirely indulgent, but so nice. Then it was nearly 6, so headed back to cinema. Interesting building- I think it's a really old-fashioned huge theatre-sized cinema that's been re-developed to be 6 small screens. maybe 300 seats- and 5 people watching the film.
The film. OMG, I LOVE IT!!!! SO COOL!!! I remember watching the guy the story's based on in real life, on Richard and Judy, I think, a few years back, talking about his family's traditional show business was going under, so they switched to making FABULOUS Drag Queen boots, specifically designed for men's weight and sizes. I absolutely ADORED Lola- the character is a big, butch, black, FABULOUS Drag Queen who designs the boots, and deals with her own issues. SO Nearly quotes "More of a man than you'll ever be... and more of a woman than you'll ever get"... which, of course, made me cry. and laugh. VERY funny film.
So I get back to my little room, having remembered to buy bread. there's so many easy meal options available to you when you have bread. And as I've been typing this, listening to Rent in german (somehow only have half of Broadway on puter, cleverly) and I'm crying, BUCKETS. I think I'm tired. So I'll cook myself some fried eggs on toast... or maybe cheese on toast... possibly toast and jam. Or a cheese sandwich. Or indeed a tuna mayo sandwich, as I brought up a mixing jug from home yesterday. countless possibilities with bread. Eggy bread. mmmmm....

uni, life
