An Ode to the Powder Room

Feb 13, 2007 16:25

In a time where many try to speak for others, I will speak simply and for speak for myself alone.

In days filled with unwonted intrusions and lack of privacy, the powder room is my most sacred place of respite.

I am not trying to make jokes. My favorite room in any house or home is always the powder room.

Usually, it is well decorated and well kempt as its primary function is to serve the needs of guests.

It is intended for the use of one individual at a time. Multiple persons in a powder room are highly unusual and probably uncomfortable if not awkward in configuration.

My own room, at school, is not my sanctuary. I have no sanctuary. I feel most comfortable in Debi + Caroline’s room, which is unfortunate because I feel that I spend too much time there and that is unfair to them, or at least to Debi. More often than not, I am just there when she returns versus being invited in her presence. I am like a surprise, that infrequently leaves, and I find that to be unacceptable.

But the powder room.
Intended for private acts in private places
With no one to offend
No faces to see
Save my own
If I choose
With no judging
No intruders
Try as they might
The powder room is perfect.

I appreciate few things as much as the powder room. When I am ready to face the world I suppose I will need to find a new place-but that is a non-issue. Everyone needs a private space.

A place to escape my roommate
To cry
To call… someone desperately needed
To reevaluate
To appreciate
To be me
Uninhibited

*Love is…
the powder room.
