Chapter Four - History repeating
That night the people in the neighbourhood didn't see the mysterious light coming from the old house, but heard most worrisome sounds coming from there. The unmistakable sound of breaking glass, things falling to the floor, cries of anguish and anger. No one could explain what was happening there and everyone who heard it tried to ignore it. There was no one living in the house after all and the police would have merrily laughed it off, had anyone told them. When the sun started to rise the sounds slowly died down and were soon forgotten by anyone but the blonde man who in fact lived inside the house everyone thought to be abandoned.
The livingroom appeared as if an earthquake had destroyed it. Not a single book had been left standing in the shelves; some of them were even torn apart, the loose sheets strewn across the floor. The mirror that had once been in the room was broken now, the shards joined by those of the vases.
Sean hadn't been able to find any other release for all the feelings bottled up inside him. His rage was like a red veil in front of his eyes, feeding the need to destroy. Destroy like he had been destroyed. Kill like William had been killed. As the night grew old his energy had vanished and Sean found himself curled up behind the couch, desperately clinging to the book William had chosen to read in his nights here. A book was all that remained and once again it was his fault. He was the one bringing destruction and doom to everything he loved. Sean didn't realize how close he was to meet the sun as the sleep of exhaustion claimed him when the first rays of light entered the room. Only the shadow of the couch kept him from finding eternal rest, a task still waiting for him. The dried tears of blood gave the image of a grown man, curled up like a child, something grotesque.
Sean blinked sleepily and looked around in confusion. The room was bathed in the warm light of the first rays of sunlight on a beautiful day. The blonde sat up abruptly as panic kicked in. Nothing happened though and he stared in amazement at his hands. What he saw wasn't the deathly pale skin but the healthy, slightly tanned skin of a living. Sean looked up, a bright smile lightening his face when he saw the person peacefully sleeping beside him. He carefully lay down again, pulling the warm, skinny body into his arms. Sean closed his eyes, inhaling the familiar scent for a few seconds, letting happiness wash over him. Everything had just been a bad dream. He was here, with William, and they were okay. Sean's fingers travelled over the soft skin, each second so precious and cherished. He opened his eyes again, looking at the peaceful face, studying each detail while his fingers combed through silky curls. William stirred and wrinkled his nose a little, causing Sean to smile and kiss his love's nose.
"Hey." Sean whispered.
William rubbed his eyes and gave Sean a sleepy smile, kissing the corners of his lover's mouth.
"Mornin'."
Sean closed his eyes again when the lithe body nestled closer to him. How he had missed this and how horrible his dream had been. But now in the light of day everything looked different and the monsters of the dream vanished. Vampires, who believed in such fairytales anyways?
"Can you imagine, I had the weirdest dream..." Sean whispered, wrapping his arms tighter around William.
"Yeah? Tell me about it." William smiled, playing with a strand of Sean's hair.
"We weren't together anymore and I was so bitter and angry. I was immortal and had lived centuries without you and when I met you again you didn't know me anymore..." Sean shuddered lightly and William cuddled closer, kissing his cheek softly.
"That is a horrible dream indeed, but it will never happen, love. I will always be with you. Forever and ever. In this life and the next."
Sean smiled at William, kissing the lush lips.
"Promise?"
"Promise." William smiled contently.
They lay in silence for a few more minutes before something changed. Sean couldn't put his finger on it at first but then he realized that William's breathing had changed. It was fast and unsteady. Soon William started to gasp for air. His brown eyes widened in confusion and his hands held onto Sean's arms tightly.
"Will? Will what is it?" Sean asked worriedly, caressing his love's cheek. He couldn't see what was wrong; William had been fine seconds ago.
"H-hurts." William whispered, fear clearly evident in his voice.
"S-Seanie, hurts so much."
"What? What hurts love? Tell me..." Sean sat up in alarm, scanning William's body for injuries. Only minutes ago the skin had been without a blemish but now there were bruises appearing right in front of Sean's eyes. William's cry of anguish let Sean's eyes snap back to his love's face and the breath was forced from his lungs. The angelic face showed angry bruises and William's nose was bleeding. When William gasped for air a small stream of blood ran from his mouth over his chin.
Sean went into panic mood, pulling William into his arms as if his embrace alone could shield him from the pain. He frantically searched for the cause of the injuries, but couldn't find it. Tears started to form in the green eyes as he was doomed to watch his love suffer.
"Will? Will talk with me, please. Will!"
William tried to raise his hand and say something, but only desperate gasps would come over his bruised lips. His gasps subsided as brown eyes became glassy.
"Will? Will no. You fucking promised!" Sean lightly shook the limp body in his arms clinging to the desperate hope to wake him again, but no spark of life would come back to William's eyes, the only sound in the room Sean's mournful sobs.
Sean's eyes snapped open as soon as the sun went down again and he scrambled to his feet. The dream had been too real, too disturbing to be forgotten. Even now the uneasy feeling wouldn't leave his stomach nor would the anguish and pain leave his heart. Without thinking about it Sean ran down the stairs, determined that he wouldn't let take fate and some gods he had never seen take away everything he had again.
