Chapter Three - Let me rest in peace
Maybe the routine had made Sean a little too careless, a little too self-conscious. Maybe it was fortuity or maybe it was another wicked game of destiny. Sean couldn't tell and he couldn't move when all of a sudden eyelids fluttered and wide, brown eyes looked up at him. For a few seconds he stared back and in those seconds memories from the past rushed through his mind. Memories of brown eyes, full of life, full of love.
It hurt more than he could have ever imagined to see those eyes so clueless and without the trace of recognition. Sean stumbled backwards, his thoughts racing. William didn't know him anymore; he was a stranger to his love.
Orlando blinked sleepily before realization dawned and his eyes snapped open. He hadn't realized what had woken him at first but when he stared directly into green eyes panic kicked in and he scrambled into a sitting position. Who was this man? Orlando bit his bottom lip, his trembling hands fidgeting with the sleeve of his jumper. The man in front of him was definitely no ghost.
"I...I...I'm r-really s-sorry but..it is bloody c-cold outside and I thought..." Orlando trailed off, swallowing hard. He could feel the man's intense gaze on him and it felt as if the green eyes looked at his very soul. There was a weird feeling of familiarity but Orlando couldn't quite put his finger on it.
"And you thought that you could just come here and make it your new home." Sean ended Orlando's sentence, his voice harsher then he intended. It hurt so much to see his love and to know that it could never be again. It had already hurt when he had seen William each night but now he knew for sure that William didn't remember and that everything he once had was lost forever.
"Leave." The hurt in Sean's heart came through as coldness and hate in his voice. He felt an inner rage, strong and stirring the need to destroy. He wanted to scream and he wanted to die. Oh, the bliss of final peace with no more thoughts, no more memories. Why was it granted to everyone but him?
Orlando shifted nervously and slowly got up.
"I...I'm sorry..." The boy whispered, his whole body trembling.
"Leave!"
Orlando almost jumped at the harsh tone and quickly gathered his few things together. He glanced once more at the man before hastily leaving the room and running down the stairs and out into the night. Orlando didn't stop until the building vanished from his view. His breathing was ragged and he sank to his knees in a dark sidestreet. Cold sweat made him shiver and he wrapped his arms around himself in a futile attempt to get a little warmer. Tears made the brown eyes appear glassy. Orlando did not only miss the warmth of the house but also the feeling of safety he had experienced there. It had been like the home he had never had, where he was cared for and looked after. Now the boy thought himself stupid. Ghosts didn't exist. The world was as cold as it had been before and he scolded himself for believing in anything different. His hopes had been destroyed so often that by now he should know better than to believe in dreams.
Sean shook with anger. Anger at William for not remembering, though deep within he knew that it wasn't the boys fault. Anger at himself for reacting the way he did. Anger at the world for forcing this onto him. A cry of frustration erupted from his mouth as Sean turned around, smashing the next best object in the room. The storm of emotions within wouldn't let him find peace and made him restless. The need to destroy grew and it was as if each object he smashed and threw against the walls was just another symbol for the love that had been destroyed and the shards that had once been his heart.
