Kinky Friedman wrote an excellent article for this month's Texas Monthly that I couldn't stop thinking about, so as odd as it may be, I just wrote a letter to a death row inmate. I've never done it before and honestly, I'm not really sure how I feel about this. I mean, I'm not Helen Prejean and what do you say to a total stranger who is probably going to die soon?

Max Soffar's IQ tests place him at a few points above retardation. His court-appointed attorney, Joe Cannon was infamous for sometimes sleeping through his clients' capital murder trials, and there is no physical evidence that Soffar was involved in the crime.

Send the guy a note. It doesn't have to be a brilliant, lengthy essay on the ills of capital punishment or anything. A cool drawing or a few kind words of encouragement are just fine.
