Old Pulp Gender Role Bending

This isn't the Barsoom post I was intending to write (still working on that one) or rather, it's a chunk of it broken out, because it was obviously not all going to fit under one essay-umbrella. In honor of the possibility that Dark Horse has thought better* of gambling a dozen or more thousand simoleons on the dark horse named "Gor", as noted overRead more... )

If Dark Horse has canceled their Gor omnibus, where will Norman's fans go for their misogynistic pseudo-porn? Through the dusty piles of remaindered paperbacks? What about their allergies?

What hath we wrought?

(also, thanks to your essay I'm now inclined to go digging for ERB's stuff)

Yes, sneezing and itchy eyes do spoil the fervid fanboy's mood, don't they?

--Oh, I'm really evil, I just had the idea for doing a fake site (a la Bonsai Kittens) to advertise Gorean Slavegirl outfits for your RealDoll...

How many emails do you think you'd get from Goreans asking how to order them?

I don't know, but it would be awfully funny to see! bellatrys October 6 2007, 00:33:05 UTC
We could offer, at an extra charge, *engraved* slave collars, just like Talena's! (After the whole Sideshow Statuette thing, I *have* no good opinion of fannish humanity left.)

... the Abyss gazes back ... and starts blathering about the artistic "merit" of Lady Death.

And then Mike Sterling will snark about it. With scans.

(Although I'm not sure which is dumbest, the Witchblade statue, the fake replica movie-prop chainsaw selling for more than a real, working chainsaw, or the AM$800 life-size statue of an Uncanon, sexed-up Star Wars (1977) Princess Leia that Chris's Invincible Superblog is mocking right now.)

I'm going with the life-size Princess Leia "Monument", because labeling it thusly is the perfect capstone to its absurdity.

Hey, it could be a life-size Princess Aura from the new Flash - that would probably be That Than Which A Dumber Cannot Be Conceived, as far as Invisible Hand stupidity re fannish tie-ins...

Guys, you think this is a joke? deiseach October 6 2007, 17:06:04 UTC
In my researches (ahem) into the appropriate leathern garb for thalarion riders, I ended up on a lot of fetishwear sites (funny, that - who'd have thought looking for men's leatherwear could lead you there, hmmmm, John Norman?) which linked in with BDSM stuff.

Engraved collars? But of course!

You'd be a legitimate business, no problem...

It's not just the fetishwear aspect, so much as it is the "fetishwear for RealDolls" bit. The saddest part is, I know such a market must exist.
