Return to the Planet of the Complete Bloody Psychopaths, part II

I suspected this was coming, too, but I kind of hoped John-Tarl would show some restraint - yes, I know, after having Tarl-Stu defeat multiple armed warriors after having been beaten and in chains for nine bloody days I really shouldn't think anything beyond him, and after the Noble Black Stallion Tarn showed up to rescue him I should have not just guessed, but been certain, but still.

He's taken to the arena to fight in gladiatorial combats with the other naughty boys of Tharna for the delight of the Tatrix and the other Masks - the brainwashed men of Tharna so accept that this is Right and Natural that they "chanted a strange paean"-

Though we are abject beasts
Fit only to live for your comfort
Fit only to die for your pleasure
Yet we glorify the Masks of Tharna.
Hail to the Masks of Tharna.
Hail to the Tatrix of our City.

and cannot be convinced to resist or stand up for themselves, at all. Tarl, of course, defies custom and pulls a Spartacus reenactment, refusing to kill another male for the pleasure of these women with their "shrill" voices. As a result, the Tatrix spares him - to throw him to the tarn, the dreadful wild tarn that a hundred tarnsmen have tried in vain to tame, and have paid with their lives instead.

And yes, it's his Noble Black Stallion Tarn.

And it recognizes him, with affection, and he doesn't even have to kick it inna head this time, it submits gladly to him by tucking its beak under his arm, and he gives it a name, "Ubar of the Skies" and sets it free and rides away bareback on it, it responding to his voice commands unlike any other tarn, after kidnapping the Tatrix to hold as hostage to get freedom for the poor girl condemned to Siberia for the shameful crime of loving a foreign poet, and the foreign poet who came back to try to rescue her and got caught, and all the other men forced to fight in the Amusements of Tharna.

And then it goes away and hunts, and brings him back a piece of meat and gives it to him freely, as if he were its chick...
