Purely by accident, thru real-world dowsing this time, I found (via a whimsical entry in a recent issue of I.D. magazine) out that in the 1972 presidential campagin, Nixon ran on a platform of tarring his Dem opponent McGovern as being for "Acid, Amnesty, and Abortion", a coinage I have found attributed to Spirou Agnew tho' can't verify that, and which the media Heathers of our parents' day reportedly picked up and ran with gleefully - I'll have to eventually get up to the college library and go through the periodical archives of 1972, I see - that is to say, accusing McGovern of being pro-drug-culture because he was in favor of decriminalizing marijuana use - so weed isn't LSD, who cares? so nobody's benefited in 25 years of Zero Tolerance for Drugs but prison privatizers, and thus manifestly unfit to run the country, as well as for being against the Vietnam War and saying, right out, that we should get out ASAP and that guys who went to Canada or deserted shouldn't be punished for that - this from a decorated WWII veteran, btw; and being for decriminalizing abortion, as well.

Nixon won by a landslide, taking 49 states with an average of 60% and getting 45% of the votes in MA.

So anyone who says this "culture wars" stuff is new, for US conservativsm, American politics, and the GOP - just hasn't been paying attention.
