should be to make sure that you get something where the basement doesn't flood in spring. Because while that doesn't mean *absolutely* that it is in danger of getting filled during a flood, it's not a good sign.

The worries right now are about the cleanup expense, and the poisoning of waterways and clambeds out in the bay from all the swamping of sewers and factories. They're telling everyone to stay OUT of the water - which seems unnecessary to me, that water looks so unhealthy right now that there'd have to be velociraptors chasing me to get me near it.

Never underestimate human idiocy: the worse the water looks, the more likely it is some idiot (usually of the male variety, usually young, and quite often with drink taken) will think it's the *perfect* time to go for a swim. Gangs of young men egging each other on to perform feats of bravado = the emergency services needing to be called out.

Drunken Snowmobiling Fatalities are an annual event, either because people think it's a good idea to try to recreate the speederbike scene in ROTJ in the piney woods, or don't believe the Fish & Game warnings about the lake ice...

Our equivalent is coming out of the pubs conveniently situated on the quayside late at night and either deciding (1) "Hey, let's all jump into the harbour from the bridge - it'll be a laugh, go on, I dare ya!" or (2) walking too close to the quayside which has had its protective chains removed by the town council for purposes unknown and misjudging (a) nearness to edge and water and (b) one's state of sobriety and ability to walk a straight line in the darkness.

Result - well, you can guess, I'm sure :-)
