Lilac Time

May 23, 2006 14:25

nenya_kanadka reminds me that a notable day is coming up on the Discworld calendar, and since I live in a place with a plethora of lilacs (it being the state flower, and brought over very early on from England, so that there are 250-year-old stands of lilac bushes trees, in the older settlements) so I snapped some photos over the weekend. Peak lilac was or would have been the previous week, and there was the storm, so the options were somewhat limited, but I found enough sheltered specimens that I got some pretty decent shots (again, thanks to everyone who contributed to the get-P@L-a-camera project last year - here's a small return on that investment!) and I've cropped and color-corrected them to (mostly) 100x100 bases for anyone to use. A couple are a little larger so that you can play with cropping them or scaling yourselves, and one is horizontal.

Most of these are the traditional old-fashioned lilacs of the sort brought over from England and growing at the Wentworths, in the most popular light-periwinkle color (white also popular, but much less so) but there is one of a specimen of the recent, much rarer Persian Lilacs which are much more intense violet and peak a little later in the spring.

(The significance of lilacs and May 25th is explained in Night Watch which I hope everyone's read already, although I didn't address that aspect when I covered the book earlier.)
