Why They Call Us "Dykes"

Apr 20, 2006 14:42

It's happened to all of us, one way or another. Either overtly - "You're a man-hating dyke!" - or implicitly: "You don't want them to think there's something wrong with you, do you?", whenever we start to test the leash a little, let alone to fight back and proclaim loudly that the System is broken, to be a little bit different, to reject the idea ( Read more... )

For in this sexist society, for a woman to be independent means she can't be a woman - she must be a dyke.

Gah. This reminds me of the most infuriating recurring discussions in feminist groups. You see, this group was a "Women's [whatever]". Only, after one hour of discussion it needed to be a "Women's and lesbians' [whatever]", because obviously, lesbians were not women nor did they wish to be called thus. At what point some prankster brought up "what about the non-whites?", and the discussion went for another four hours (enough to read a whole Star Wars novel), until, exhausted, everyone still awake agreed on "Women's, lesbians', disabled women, female immigrants e.t.c.p.p. [whatever]."

And we didn't do that once. We did it twice a f*** year.

Why is it [=being called a lesbian] worse than, say, being called a "sycophant," or "gold-digging parasite" or even "legalized prostitute"Because it's usually not true? You can defend against a true assertion by claiming that your behaviour is the reasonable and ethical thing to do. While ( ... )

a liar and slanderer of historical figures, someone who wants to enslave and abuse men, or any other number of objectively-bad things which, the antifeminists *do* accuse us of being and doing, which are also untrue, projections or utter fabrications? Why is the accusation of being sexually uninterested in men the worst of all possible ones, the one that's considered the shutting-up insult par excellence, worse even than the undeniable "cunt", really ( ... )

All the perks of marriage (that gays can't have) ... isn't that marriage gives you privileges but: of course a man's property can't testify against him in a trial, and so forth. A marriage isn't two people, it's a man and his property ...

and is considered to be a threat to the very foundations of Civilization. Two guys - who's "the woman"--? Two gals - do they *both* "wear the pants"--?

Puny patriarchal minds cannot cope with this, and fizz and spark out.

This is a great post.

When a woman doesn't fit into the slot called 'feminine' the only other slot they have is 'lesbian'. It's very freeing to discard those roles and only be oneself, but it certainly does stress people who value the idea of woman as invented by the patriarchy.

They deserve the stress, but I wish they didn't visit it on the people they see as causing it.
