Out of Bounds #11 is over! Well, almost. After I strike the Scottish Rite set tomorrow, then it will be for me.
What an insane week. So much work.
I was going to take a more minimalist approach with set design now that my freelance art work load is non-stop. But then when I brought a set construction guy onto the team I felt inspired to work with him on making the sets more fun and very tied into the theme (which was "2012: Get The Last Laugh" An Apocalypse theme).
The set design team made 2 4'x6' platforms (for standing on and providing levels for the stage), 3 4'x6.5' flats (for standing up and providing a small painted wall), 6 full-color large comic book-style illustrations on large sheets of foamboard, 3 full-color murals on the flats, 4 large painted OOB logos, 1 painted addition to the upstairs Hideout stage, and 4 specialty chairs (8 were planned, but then after improvisers broke 2 of the first 4 chairs, I called it quits with that plan). This all happened Monday-Friday, during the day.
He made the set pieces, I did most of the painting. I had a set of volunteers for the first time ever, and they were invaluable. One of my main volunteers even won the Volunteer of the Year Award, which was pretty cool. He's going to be helping me tomorrow, too.
I did 6 shows in the festival this year. All of them went well. PGraph played in a headlining show at the Scottish Rite on Sunday and I think we killed it. I was a nervous wreck all week, and playing in that PGraph show at the end of the week was an amazing release.
I saw a bunch of great shows, all very different. I loved the amount of variety in the festival, it was astounding, even in just the small selection of what I was able to see. Adsit & Lutz (2 guys from 30 Rock) came and did their 2-person improv show, and it was extremely wonderful. Patient yet energetic, well-paced yet spontaneous. Very inspiring. 3 FOR ALL came back this year and they had a completely amazing and inspiring show as well. Just so sharp, precise, full of purpose and yet still playful, surprising.
How lovely is it to be inspired again with improv when you've almost given up hope (of being inspired by improv alone)?
So while I was exhausted, it turned from a frustrated kind of exhaustion into a delirious and giddy one.
Last year, we had just returned from the Edinburgh madness and OOB was a blur, it was still a great week, but this year it really felt special again.
The Out of Bounds Comedy Festival, while it may have some kinks and problems, is a magical event. It feels like a special holiday, like a strange kind of Christmas.
I'll post some of my favorite photos sometime later as they start rolling in.
