I was listening to the news on the radio this lunch time and I heard something that has made me very ranty.
A few years ago in Ireland a law was passed whereby all couples had to notify the state of the wedding three months before it happened. Seeing as most weddings are planned a lot longer than this is was doable, if, I think, a bit Big Brother.
Now, apparently this has come in in the last few weeks, couples have to make an appointment with the marriage registrar for permission. WTF?! But it gets better.
The appointment costs E150.
And the icing on the cake? The backlog in the Dublin area is so bad that couples are in danger of missing thier wedding dates cos they can not get an appointment.
Anyway - the solution is so fudging Irish.
To get over the backlog, according to a registrar who gave this advice to a panicking couple on the qt: you can (a) "go down the country" ie take a day off work and go see a registrar in a small town, or (b) apply to the Courts who will grant an exemption, this option is free as opposed to the E150 a registrar charges.
I live in a very, very strange country that needs a slap.
Good thing I have no intention of ever getting married then huh? (Unless it's to JDM and it's in the Elvis Wedding Chapel in Vegas ;) )
