Soooo I was at Animal Control the other day. You know, that kill shelter. I don't know what made me go but I just randomly got out of my chair and said, 'during lunchtime I feel like going to the shelter.'
I played with all the cats and kittens, made notes of the ones I liked. Turns out some people beat me to it and grabbed the ones I liked. As I was leaving there was this woman at the intake section trying to leave her cat. She was visibly upset.
She was leaving her cat, a gorgeous white Persian who is 8 years old. She said she could no longer care for her because she gets chemo for breast cancer and it leaves her unable to deal. Also, the cat has tendencies to bite and scratch. The guy at intake said that they had no space and that the cat was most likely un-adoptable due to age and aggression. She was better off leaving $75 to leave her to be euthanized.
I really felt for both the lady and the cat. I told her to keep her $75 and give me the cat. She seemed happy and relieved. She handed over the big ass cat crate and just like that the kitty was mine.
Poor baby was scared during the transport home. Wasn't too bad since I took the express bus. She meowed and meowed. Brought her home and opened the cage, and out she went exploring. She hid under the bed and I thought she was gonna be there for at least a few days. Nope, she came out that night and poked around. She climbed my huge laundry pile like a mountain. She's a bit of a slut, she loooooooves Dan gives him lots of belly.
She seriously is the most beautiful cat I have ever seen. Not just saying that cuz she's mine. She has this gorgeous white coat and the cutest lil face. When I sleep she comes by me and watches. When I turn on the lights after being in the dark, she keeps her eyes closed until they adjust. It's too cute and funny.
Her first few days with us, she didn't show any signs of aggression. Once she got used to us it came out. As I get to know her I realize that perhaps she just wasn't handled right while growing up and that her old owner just didn't get her. The lady did tell me when the cat was a young kitten her brother and boyfriend used to do things to it (like put scotch tape on her tail binding her to objects and other really stupid hurtful cruel things). Gee, I wonder why the cat is aggressive.
The cat is actually very sweet in nature and very affectionate, but on her terms only. Typical cat in other words. When we're sitting she'll come up to us and rub against our legs and purr loudly. Then it's ok to pet her, but not over do it. When she's had her fill she'll give signal like wagging her tail or changing body language to let you know before she swats or tries to nip. I do notice she's afraid of fast hand movements and just too much hand action in general. I'm guessing that perhaps she was probably hit or struck a lot with hands. Poor baby. She definitely puts out abused cat vibes. There was also a lot of young kids coming to visit at her old place. The lady said that the cat used to strike out at them but I'm guessing they probably antagonized the cat in the first place.
Well, at least she's safe with us now. At first I took her to perhaps pass her on to a rescue or a crazy cat lady that could understand her. Originally I just wanted to foster her so she wouldn't get euthanized. However, everyday I'm growing a bit attached to her. We'll see.
She is very cute and very beautiful. She's very curious and very keen at meowing at me whenever she has complaints. Like last night when I went on a cleaning spree, I had things everywhere and was blocking her path. She meowed and meowed until i cleared her space. Silly!
Today I went to this independently owned pet store (run by a brother and sister who _really_ love animals and have 5 cats themselves). I bought her a scratch pad and some catnip, as well as a can of fishy type wet food as a treat. I told the guy her story and he gave me a huge bag with free cat food samples. Super fabulous! The store only carries holistic type pet food and refuse to stock Iams. Believe it or not, it is reasonably priced. He also gave me a bunch of literature on preventing feline UTIs and other informative topics relating to cat care. I really liked this store and told him I'll definitely be back to shop there since I believe in supporting independently owned shops instead of big evil corporate conglomerates. He was happy and thanked me. In case you would like to check them out, they do have a website and an Ebay store, They ship to any of the 50 states. Check out their sit at: randtpetsupply.com totally worth supporting independently owned stores, esp. run by fellow animal lovers!
I brought home the scratch pad, put on cat nip and waited. She inspected it and decided she wanted to get mad at it. She hissed at it and at me then hid. Then came back out and smelled it more then meowed. The catnip must have had it's effect because she was acting funny after, making noises that sound somewhere between a purr and meow. She's too funny.
My mom asked what trouble am I getting myself into. Funny, I don't see her as a big problem. Of course now I have some responsibilities that I didn't have before, but then again I wasn't really doing much before. Since she's a persian I will have to do much more upkeep of the place so it doesn't get covered in cat fur. I've been vacuuming every night and using the cat hair roller. It keeps things under control. As long as her boundaries are respected and she is understood, she is a good girl.I don't regret it and am happy to give her a happy quiet loving safe space. We'll see what transpires for now. Cats really are a special type of animal. When they take to you and give your love and affection, it really is a special thing. It shows you earned their trust and respect and that in itself is an honor. I wuv my lil kitty!
I'll post pics up soon.
