She doesn’t see Joe again for a year.

They haven’t spoken, he hasn’t visit.

She’s put their moment on the steps of her home out of her mind; she goes about her everyday life so well it’s almost as if it never happened. Except for certain nights when she tosses and turns and wonders what it would be like to have him next to her, she’s good at denial.

She’s so very good at denial, of course that is until she’s smacked in the face with what she’s been ignoring.

Like the first case they worked together she hunting a serial killer, some psycho that likes to butcher up young couples. This time not only is he calling the shots, it’s on his turf. She and Maura have been in Washington two days, when she sees him for the first time; the first thought that goes through her head is that Washington has been good to him. He always had the juice; it’s what has gotten him where he is today. But if he was confident and authoritative back in Boston, here it comes of him in waves. The second thought is she has no idea how to act around him.

She knows how she’s always acted around him, how they have always acted around each other. But that was before they poured their feelings, just like the rain that fell on them, all over her steps. So she’s awkward, more awkward then usual and it’s contagious because he gets a case of it too. Maura, she finds it endlessly amusing. It comes to ahead after they solve the case, her flight is in the morning and she doesn’t think she’ll see him again during this trip until he’s knocking on her hotel door.

Let it be known no one can get under her skin faster the Joe Grant, not even her ma.

The awkwardness is gone the second she calls him an ass. And then he’s laughing.

“Finally Janey!” He says through his chuckles.

“Don’t call me Janey, you jerk!” She grounds out through clenched teeth and she’s seconds away from stomping her foot.

“I was wondering when you would give up the miss manners routine.”

“Miss manners?” She parrots.

“Yes!” He says exasperated. “This polite strangers crap, you and me aren’t strangers and we sure as hell aren’t polite.”

Jane stared at him wide-eye and shakes her head at his reasoning. “So you provoke me into insulting you?”

“No,” He says taking a few short steps to close the gap between them. “I provoked you into talking to me the way you usually do, it just so happens that the way you usually talk to me is by insulting me.”

“You are such a-“

Anything else she’s about to say get cut off by his lips. He kisses her and it’s a year ago on her steps again. His lips part hers and she lets him. His tongue dances with hers and she moans, his arms wrap her in close and she sighs in such a way that makes her blush.

When he has his fill he finally lets her up for air. His lips are swollen but it doesn’t stop him from flashing the same grin he flashed her a year ago. She sighs his name and his smile loses it cocky quality, turning soft. He places his index finger to her mouth stopping her before she talks her way out of this, them.

“I wanted you to talk to me Jane,” He starts, his smile changing a third time, this time teasing. “Now it’s time for both of us to be quiet.”

She’s still laughing as he kisses her once more. They don’t talk for the rest of the night. And in the morning as she leaves the warm bed they’ve shared it’s her that kisses him quiet. They don’t need words right now.

It’s not their time, not yet.

Someday.
