In 1964 Woody Allen started off with a great film called What’s Up Tiger Lilly. Originally it was a Japanese action film called : International Secret Police: Key of Keys. Allen dubbed the film and changed the plot , the characters now go into the film searching for a secret egg salad recipe. Instead of the film being an action one it was changed to a comedy, in which Allen changed both the soundtrack and dialogue.
I thought What’s Up Tiger Lilly was a good movie. I mean it didn’t have a plot at all but sometimes that’s good. I liked how everything was so out of the ordinary and different. I know other movies have been done like this one but this was the first movie I’ve seen done like this. I think this whole idea of dubbing a movie and making it so different and funny is a hard thing to do. It could’ve been a really cheesy movie but I don’t think it was. I think that What’s Up Tiger Lilly was a hard movie to create but Allen did a really good job with making it so enjoyable.
The music in What’s Up Tiger Lilly was amazing. It was all from the band The Lovin’ Spoonful. I liked the music a lot even though it was so random. It would just pop up with the band on a boat and stuff. I also thought the voices were a good catch to reel in the audience. Some of the characters really made me laugh, with their squeaky voices and stuff. I also liked how Woody Allen would come into the movie and try to tell what’s going on. Even though he really wouldn’t be helping us understand it at all. Most people would think it’s corny and stupid but I found it pleasant and quite amusing.
I can see how this movie can go two different ways. It looks like the kind of movie where people either hate it or love it. For instance if your older and are watching it you’d probably just see it as some stupid little perks here and there. I mean it probably would get old if you watched it too much over and over. However all in all it was a good movie, as well as a very strange movie. Woody Allen does a good job of making sure things aren’t made a big deal. The whole movie is everything most films are sex and violence minus most of the rock n’ roll and adding a lot of sweet special effects. It’s pretty cliché though. The whole randomness thing is more of freedom that Woody Allen was trying to express. It was all crazy, un-called for and free. Sort of like a bunch of thoughts running around in someone’s brain.
