When we are discussing "separation of church and state" it is not actually enshrined in the Constitution as such. There's the Establishment clause and Free Exercise clause.
Together, as per the Supreme Court in Everson, we get some amount of separation. This does not mean that people can't vote their conscience or vote according to their religious beliefs (whatever they are).
That's just dumb.
Please, please people in my class, stop being dumb.
We can't establish a religion or give preference. Remember the Lemon test? Remember that?
It's important to remember that when you want to start spouting off about Prop. 8 and the separation of church and state. You don't have to like Prop, 8. You don't have to believe it should have passed. You don't have to believe it'll be upheld. You don't have to support it. But you should at least make an educated argument that is more than "but people shouldn't inject religion into politics!".
Religion has been a part of politics since the foundation of the USA.
If you don't like it, cope. It is simply a fact.
Religion is not required nor can we force anyone to be a particular faith. People have the right to practice or not as they see fit and can vote according to those beliefs. Thus, religion is a part of politics.
Morality is a part of politics.
It just is.
