Schweppervescence

Just want to post this here, mostly for my own reference in future: I found a clip of my great-uncle in one of his Schweppes ads! All this posting about family stuff brought him to mind and I thought I'd see if there was anything out there, and here it is. Very much of its time but rather charming..

jez_alone might be interested in this since it's early work by Ogilvy. He had the bright idea of using my great-uncle (Commander Whitehead) as the central figure in Schweppes advertising because he was the actual president of Schweppes USA and his beardy Britishness went down well with the American audience :-)

I'm liking this quote from a website I found along the search route:
'On his many trips around the USA, the Commander was greeted politely by thousands of fans who not only enjoyed the Schweppes products but his stylish British persona. During one such visit to the West Coast, a young woman - a member of the "live" audience at a Los Angeles TV show asked: "How do American women strike you?" The Commander cleverly replied "So far, none have."
