Subject: [Comp-lit-391a-01-spr11] Fwd: Green Lantern Comic Book Artist @ UMass 3/30
Here is the information on the two events with the Golden Age comic book artist Irwin Hasen, most famous for his work as one of the original Green Lantern artists, and the creator of the hugely popular comic strip Dondi, about an Italian orphan boy adopted by a GI after WWII. Irwin will speak in 106 Thompson at 7 PM next Wednesday, March 30th, in 106 Thompson.
Irwin is one the very few artists remaining from the first years of comic books (1930s-1940s), and one of the most important in terms of his aesthetic contributions to the development of American superheroes and the comic book medium, as well as having been a friend and colleague of all the most important artists and writers of that era.
On Thursday, March 31st, Irwin will appear with the filmmaker Dan Makara for a showing of Dan's documentary Irwin: A New York Story at 5 PM in 301 Herter Hall, with a discussion afterwards.
Irwin has also recently published a graphic novel autobiography, and there will be a signing and you will be able to buy the book and DVDs of the documentary after Irwin's talk on Wednesday. Please circulate this email to any students who might find it of interest. The events are sponsored by the Department of Judaic and Near Eastern Studies and the Posen Foundation in Jewish Secularism. There are two attached images of his work, and the press release.
