Graphic Novel Art J-term course at Hampshire

Jan 01, 2010 20:10

Hey, I hope everyone is having a great break (and is not too bored without MHC)!

This is just a FYI that there is a Hampshire College J-term course about the art/creation side to Graphic Novels. The only thing is that it has a prerequisite of a drawing course, but there are still slots open. It is not listed under ISIS, but rather Hampshire's Hub; but after contacting the professor, he said Five College students could attend the class.

I am linking and posting the full course description with time, date, and place. Those interested can message the professor, Samuel Kanner on facebook. (Sorry, I haven't been able to find his email address anywhere).

(EDIT: After talking to the Registrar's office, because the course is not listed under ISIS, it may not be for credit. However, it is listed on the hub--not the EPEC--so, I have messaged the professor to verify whether or not it is a credit course. I will update this entry again, once I know for sure either way.)

Description Techniques in Graphic Novel Storytelling: ***THIS IS A CO-CURRICULAR
WORKSHOP*** Ever wonder what separates a truly influential graphic novel from the all
rest? How pages of illustrations in a book with half the amount of words in a literary
novel can make you feel like you?ve traveled so far? Why sometimes that one graphic novel
would have been better off staying a novel and not get turned into a movie?

When put together, the visual image and the written word create a class of storytelling
all on its own. Using (but not limited to) graphic novels as teaching guides, we will
examine and look for the specific techniques employed by their creators for relationships
between time and action, flow and pacing and a host of other criteria. Once analyzed,
these relationships will be applied to class assignments and the production of a final
project that represents the student?s understanding of 2 or more of the techniques
studied in class.
Come prepared to discuss your personal influences and inspirations from the sequential
art world. If possible, please bring in a copy of the book you plan to discuss.

Prerequisites or Restrictions: 200 level Drawing Foundations course or equivalent.
Instructor: Samuel Kanner
